Lake Petersburg
Rustic ranch homes with sweeping views
Lake Petersburg lots are arranged so each resident can own a slice of the lake's coastline. Ranch-style homes are the most common here, dating back to the 1960s and 70s. There are more modern properties and some open lots, too. With private docks and sweeping views, these homes typically range from $250,000 to $500,000, based on size. Homes sit right on the lake shore but are not in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area. Most homes have around 2,000 square feet, and yards are often more than a quarter acre. Streets off the main road are gravel and don't have sidewalks, giving a rural, rustic feel. "It's hard to get in the community," Lounsberry says. "Everybody and their grandmother knows when a house is going to go on the market — so when it does, it's a scramble."Events, amenities and restrictions from the Lake Petersburg Association
All of the homes on the lake shore are part of the Lake Petersburg Association, which has monthly dues of around $60. There are limitations on building additions, and though renting out homes is allowed, there is a year-long limit and an additional fee. The association works to bring the community together with regular events like weekly bass fishing tournaments and a holiday lights competition. Fourth of July is one of the biggest events, with a fireworks show and raffle. The association also manages the community's sewer system. Homeowners are responsible for maintaining their systems, with a $400 annual fee for maintenance.Boating, golfing and walks through history
The biggest natural outdoor attraction here is obviously the lake, which is open for residents only. Locals enjoy water skiing, fishing and swimming in the sparkling water. Motorized water vehicles are restricted in the mornings and evenings to protect from noise pollution. But the lake isn't the only way to get outside. The west side of the community is home to the Shambolee Golf Course, a public 18-hole golf course with local leagues and a lively bar.Directly east of the lake is Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, a reconstructed village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood. There's free admission, so it's a well-trodden spot to take walks amidst quaint log cabins and gardens. The Fall Festival stands out among the site's popular seasonal events, with costumed reenactors and activities like soap-making and blacksmithing.
Community support and local businesses in Petersburg
Lake Petersburg is only about two miles from the historic city of Petersburg, which has a charming small-town atmosphere. "It's amazing and unique how the community around Petersburg supports each other. A few years back, there was a house fire, and everyone came together to donate clothes and toys," Lounsberry says. "A true community feel is a good way to put it." The town also has a lively selection of local businesses. Broadgauge, housed in a restored general store in 1872, is a one-stop shop for entertainment. It opens in the morning as a quaint coffee shop and, come evening, is a lively bar, classy restaurant and event space. Shows of live music, comedy and film screenings are held here, and there are horse-drawn carriage rides on the weekend. Over at the Hand of Fate brewery, patrons can enjoy craft beers and board games on their outdoor rooftop. Mom + Pop's is a modern take on the classic diner, with daily specials and a hugely popular Friday fried chicken buffet. There's also a local wine bar, several coffee shops and a few boutiques.A tight-knit local school system
Local kids are zoned to be a part of the PORTA Community Unit School District No. 202, which has three schools in the city of Petersburg. PORTA Elementary serves prekindergarten through second grade, and PORTA Central serves grades third through sixth. Seventh through twelfth graders finish out at PORTA Jr-Sr High School. All three schools get a B-minus grade from Niche. PORTA High School has a variety of academic offerings, from AP courses to more hands-on agriculture and industrial options. Even though the school spans six grades, less than 500 kids attend, creating a tight-knit environment.Springfield is 30 minutes away
Petersburg has city amenities like a post office, one large grocery store and even a small hospital. However, for larger hospitals, more employers, and a regional airport, Springfield is 20 miles away. It's a drive that takes around 30 minutes on average. For an even larger city experience, residents can take 30 minutes to connect out to Interstate 55, which runs to St. Louis and Chicago.
