Byberry
Suburban subdivision and active adult community
Byberry is home to two subdivisions: Normandy and the Arbours at Eagle Pointe. Normandy sits below Pennsylvania Route 63 and features traditional Cape Cod-style homes and sidewalk-lined streets. Most homes were built between the 1950s and 1970s and sit side-by-side on modest lots with room for a small patio or in-ground pool. Normandy is just north of the Northeast Philadelphia Airport, and planes frequently fly overhead. Prices for single-family homes in the subdivision range from around $335,000 to $430,000. Further north across U.S. Route 1, the Arbours at Eagle Pointe is an active adult community with a mix of 398 single-family homes and townhouses built around the 2010s. Residents have access to a clubhouse with a library, exercise room and outdoor pool. New traditional single-family homes sell for about $430,000 to $590,000, while townhouses range from around $360,000 to $420,000.Proximity to Center City and Northeast Philadelphia Airport
U.S. Route 1 and Pennsylvania State Route 63 intersect in the southwestern corner of Byberry. Locally known as Roosevelt Boulevard and Woodhaven Road, the highways connect to major thoroughfares such as Interstate 95. Center City, Philly’s main entertainment and business district, is about a 17-mile drive south. SEPTA provides local bus service, with stops along the neighborhood’s main streets. Somerton Station is about 3 miles east, and SEPTA’s West Trenton Line travels south to Center City, among other places. Residents are just 4 miles north of the Northeast Philadelphia Airport, which is the fourth busiest airport in the state and primarily accommodates corporate and privately-owned aircraft. Philadelphia International Airport is less than a 30-mile drive south.Convenient commercial corridor along Roosevelt Boulevard
Roosevelt Boulevard runs north-south through Byberry and is a popular destination for shopping and dining. The Boulevard Plaza shopping center hosts big retailers such as Target and ShopRite. Local favorites include Steve’s Prince of Steaks, a Philly staple known for its award-winning cheese steaks made from sauteed rib-eye beef, melted cheese and homemade rolls. “There’s also more family restaurants around there,” Nelson says. A bit further north off of the thoroughfare, locally owned spots like Momma Mia’s Pizzeria serve up fresh pies next to Neli’s Deli, a neighborhood haunt selling hoagies and quick convenience items. An 11-acre community garden at Benjamin Rush State Park
Residents are about a mile south of Benjamin Rush State Park, which provides respite from the neighborhood's industrial centers along Southampton Road and is the only state park in Philadelphia. Named after Byberry's Founding Father, the green space features over three miles of multi-use trails and is home to the Northeast Radio-Controlled Airplane Club, whose members can frequently be seen flying model airplanes around the park's fly zone. “It’s considered a passive park. It’s all about the walking trails,” says Ron Huber, president of the Benjamin Rush State Park Garden Association. “There’s always been a bird watch group that on Sundays is walking through the park.” The Benjamin Rush Community Garden spans 11 acres, and members have access to 30-foot by 30-foot plots. “We’ve been there since the early 70s, and people come from all over. A lot of homes don’t have the yard space to have a vegetable garden, so if people are interested in gardening, it’s a great opportunity,” Huber says. A bit further south is the Lighthouse Soccer Club, Philadelphia's oldest youth soccer club. The association has five soccer fields and various youth programs for kids ages 5 to 18. Adults can compete in the Inter-County Soccer League on the men's and women's teams known as Lighthouse United.Specialized programs at George Washington High School
The Philadelphia City School District serves the neighborhood and earns a C-minus from Niche. Students begin their education at the C-plus-rated Watson Comly School before moving to C.C.A. Baldi Middle School, earning a B-minus grade. Teens attend George Washington High School, which earns a C and offers students the opportunity to earn college credit through Advanced Placement Courses, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or by enrolling in dual enrollment courses at the nearby Community College of Philadelphia. The high school also boasts famous alumni like comedian Kevin Hart and screenwriter David Berenbaum, who wrote the hit movie Elf.
