Castor Gardens
Row houses and twin homes
A tiny neighborhood mostly made up of attached row homes, it features tree-lined sidewalks and an overall suburban vibe. The limited number of single-family homes are generally priced from $165,000 to $410,000. Realtor Will Catlett of Century 21 Advantage Gold-South Philadelphia says the lower end represents homes requiring updates. Most of the properties are row houses that lack backyards but often have attached garages accessed via a back laneway. Parts of Castor Garden’s north side comprise single-family and twin residences. Like the row houses in the neighborhood, twins frequently have back alleyways, but their front yards are typically larger. Twins start at $220,000 and can cost as much as $265,000. The CAP Index crime score is 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4.Diversity at Northeast High
Elementary students can attend six separate schools that feed into Northeast High School. J. Hampton Moore School, a K-5 school, has a C-minus Niche grade. Castor Gardens Middle School also has a C-minus rating. Northeast High is the fourth most diverse public high school in the state, and it gets a B-minus grade from Niche. There are also 15 colleges and universities near the neighborhood, including La Salle University, Salus University and Gratz College.Roller and ice hockey at local parks
At Max Myers Recreation Center, the playground's metal giraffe is a popular sight. The center features an indoor pool, and visitors can also join a game of pickup basketball, play a set of tennis or visit the roller hockey rink. Part of Tarken Playground, Tarken Ice Rink has hockey leagues, classes and public skating. The 10-acre Jardel Recreation Center is a one-stop park with activities ranging from roller hockey to tennis to weight training. Catlett says that rowdy behavior has slowed the number of events held in the community, so most folks now travel to downtown Philadelphia for celebrations and sports.Philadelphia staples on Cottman Avenue
The neighborhood's north side is fronted by Cottman Avenue, which is lined with shops and eateries. At lunchtime, food trucks serve up a quick meal. Cheesesteaks are the unofficial food of the City of Brotherly Love and Castor Gardens has a location of Steve's Prince of Steaks, beloved by many for its thinly cut ribeye cheesesteaks. Alternately, across Cottman Avenue from Jardel Recreation Center, Northeast Sandwich Co. offers its Pork Roll Cheesesteak, combining two Philadelphia favorites. Serving exceptionally spicy chicken from a small hut, Asad's Hot Chicken is literally a neighborhood hot spot. It's close to Roosevelt Mall, which has stores like Target, Macy's, Ross and more to meet shopping needs. ShopRite at Lawndale Plaza accommodates grocery runs. There are three local places of worship near the neighborhood, including Fellowship Greater Jehovah Baptist Church.Convenient commutes via SEPTA buses and trains
The intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue is Castor Gardens’ busiest thoroughfare. Although the neighborhood is walkable, SEPTA provides convenient public transit around the city, there are two bus stops, and the Ryers and Lawndale subway stations are available. It's a 10-mile trip to Center City from Castor Gardens, and access to Interstate 95 is 3 miles away. Philadelphia International and Trenton-Mercer airports are less than 45 minutes away for those who must travel long distances.
