Residents value walkability and convenience in central Philadelphia
In 2024, USA Today named Philadelphia as the United States’ most walkable city. Far and away the most populous area in the state of Pennsylvania, residents often forgo driving, biking or other methods of getting around in favor of walking. The city takes pride in that characteristic of its population, sometimes highlighting it on billboards, and the neighborhood of Dickinson Square West is no different. “There’s good walkability,” says Vincent Mancini, a Realtor with Keller Williams Philly who lives in the adjacent Queens Village neighborhood. “There’s a good gym, some good restaurants and a few parks. It’s just very walkable, pretty simply.”
Whether it’s the rowhouses that make up most of the neighborhood or a small area of single-family homes in its northeastern corner, all residential spots in Dickinson Square West offer walkability to local restaurants, stores and more. The convenience isn’t exclusive to the neighborhood, though: it applies to much of central Philadelphia. “What I’ve always liked about it is you can get to one side of Philadelphia to the other in a pretty reasonable time frame, even if you’re walking,” says Mike Faber, a Realtor with Keller Williams Empower. “You could walk it. Philly is very walkable.”

Just north, swing sets sit alongside a large tennis court at Weccacoe Playground. “That’s one I happen to love,” Elstone says. “We used to go and play tennis there quite a bit. It’s really nice and within walking distance of one of the better schools in the area. They have a tennis court, which is tough to find in the city of Philadelphia.”
Also in the northeast corner of the neighborhood, Sacks Playground offers several basketball courts, two baseball fields and a pool alongside its play equipment. Alternatively, residents can head to one of several neighborhood pocket parks. “There are all these little, tiny squares that are less than a block,” says Sean Elstone, a Realtor with Keller Williams Main Line Realty. The nearby smaller Gold Star Park accommodates tai chi gatherings, dog-walking and events on its green expanse. Students from Eliza B. Kirkbride School also have recess there.

Flocks of Eagles fans come together on game day
Philadelphia Eagles fans had a championship to cheer about as recently as 2018, but the city has had to wait longer for the Phillies, 76ers or Flyers to revisit the mountaintop of baseball, basketball or hockey. “Philly’s a die-hard sports town, but the Eagles run this city,” says a local who’s been a fan of Philadelphia’s sports teams for nearly 20 years. “It’s just a crazy bond that everybody has here. It’s one of the main things that draws people together in this city.” All four teams play at three stadiums in the Philadelphia Sports Complex to the south, with the 76ers and Flyers sharing Wells Fargo Center.
