East Oak Lane

Long-standing and cared-for houses
The oldest houses in East Oak Lane are west of Fifth Street and they grow more elaborate as they get closer to Oak Lane, a half-mile-long road that runs northeastward between Broad Street and Cheltenham Avenue. “They’re gigantic,” says Callahan, who runs TheNortheastLife.com with two partners. “Clearly people put a lot of thought into these homes.” Homes sit up from the streets on hills on large lots with sidewalks, and tidy front yards. In certain sections, the roadways are lined with young maple trees. Mixed architectural styles are everywhere. There are a lot of stone exteriors on anything from a colonial manor with a wraparound porch to a Tudor with an unequally pitched roof. An eight-bedroom American Foursquare with a stucco exterior and red clay tile roof can sell in the high $500,000s. To the southeast, stone and brick rowhouses and twin condominiums dominate. For those who prefer a ranch home, bungalow or Cape Cod-style property, the southern side of the neighborhood has four-bedroom ranch homes with stone exteriors can price in the high $300,000s. The larger, older homes bring the median price in East Oak Lane to around $324,500 compared to $218,000 in West Oak Lane, which is mostly a rowhome community.Career path programs
Public elementary students attend Ellwood School and Wagner Middle School. Both schools earn C-minus ratings from Niche. Neighborhood kids go on to D-plus-rated Martin Luther King High School, which has a student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. It offers AP classes, as well as career and technical programs that focus on business, culinary skills and health. East Oak Lane is also home to the first bilingual charter school in Pennsylvania, the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, providing academic programming from kindergarten to eighth grade in both English and Spanish.Community events on the green space
The recreation center located at Sturgis Playground in the center of town provides neighborhood youth a place for learning, friendship and play. Residents attend movie nights, arts and crafts, bingo and summer camp here hosted by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. They give back to the community with food drives and Thanksgiving meal-packing events they hold. For free fun anytime, locals head to the playground and cool off at the splash pad when the sprinklers are on. Many toss a Frisbee for a little Ultimate on the field where youth leagues play football.A mecca of Korean cuisine
Korean culture features prominently in East Oak Lane. For a quick snack, grab some spicy Korean fried chicken at Café Soho. For a sit-down meal and authentic feel, Jong Ka Jib serves traditional bibimbap, bulgogi and japchae in a dining room complete with bamboo shades and wood finishes from floor to ceiling, including the polished tables and benches. And, of course, the experience wouldn’t be complete without some bubble tea. Luckily, thirsty patrons can grab some at Mr. Wish Olney. Residents can experience a new Korean dish or make an old favorite by popping by H Mart Philadelphia, a Korean grocery chain stocked with fresh lychee, live seafood, frozen mandu and a food court.A nearby transportation hub
For those traveling downtown or out of the city, Fern Rock Transportation Center is conveniently located just a mile south in Olney. Commuters can park the car in its lots and find a bus or SEPTA line for work or play in greater Philadelphia.
