Living in the heart of Northeast Philly
Away from the bustle of downtown and sandwiched between two popular parks, Mayfair is the kind of walkable neighborhood where residents take pride in their green space and their location northeast of the city. “Mayfair is where the Greater Northeast starts,” says Stacy Stier, a broker/owner of Realty One Group Focus with 20 years of experience selling homes in the Philadelphia area. “It’s the heart of Northeast Philly.” And for those who take pride in their local teams, Mayfair is the place to be after a big game. About 10 miles northeast of downtown, the streets in Mayfair shut down so Eagles, 76ers, Flyers and Phillies fans can celebrate their wins – no matter how small. “Anytime one of our sports teams does mildly good, everyone better get straight to Frankford and Cottman,” says Stier, who grew up near Frankford Avenue.

Cheesesteaks and brews on The Avenue
The Northeast community gathers to watch the game in bars around the intersection of Frankford and Cottman avenues when a Philadelphia team plays, and the whole city joins them after a big win. “When the fans come to this area, you won’t be able to park or drive for 10 to 20 blocks because people are celebrating in the streets,” Stier says. “First responders grease the poles around Frankford and Cottman, so the extreme fans don’t climb them. It’s one of the most popular areas for passionate Philly fans.” Residents can catch a game while eating a cheesesteak at Frank’s Steak & Burgers, but right across the street, Francesco Steaks is just as popular. Nearby, ChickCoDo serves savory chicken sandwiches and specialty donuts by the dozen. After dinner and dessert, locals might head to Spiked Sports Lounge & Grill or Cappy’s Café for postgame brews and cocktails. In addition to pubs and restaurants, Frankford Avenue is also home to a variety of boutiques, salons, medical services and convenience stores.

Markets and parades where Frankford meets Cottman
The Mayfair Business Improvement District was formed in 2015 to help the commercial growth of the community. This growth includes attracting Philadelphians from all over the city to Mayfair – not just for sports celebrations. The Mayfair Night Market is an annual family-friendly event that takes place each May on the corner of Frankford and Cottman avenues. Visitors can browse the craft and food tents at the evening market and enjoy happy hour drinks accompanied by live music. This corner is also where the annual Mayfair-Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade comes through, which draws in thousands of people each year. And the Tree Lighting Ceremony in December means free photos with Santa.

Traditional Philadelphia-style rowhomes
Sidewalks connect Frankford and Cottman avenues to the residential streets in Mayfair, which are made up of traditional Philadelphia-style row homes and the occasional twin home. These dwellings often feature brick or vinyl siding, and some have decorative stone accents and covered front porches. Unit sizes can range between 1,000 to 1,500 square feet, and prices typically start around $175,000 and increase to about $250,000 for a property with recent upgrades. Around the back of these homes are alleyways where residents can park their cars in attached garages or driveways.

Tucked between Wissinoming and Pennypack parks
Wissinoming Park, on the south side of town, has athletic fields and courts, including a roller hockey rink. Kids can also run around the playground and use the splash pad, which is open during the warmer months. Just north of Mayfair is the expansive Pennypack Park. With 1,600 acres of woodlands and grassy fields surrounding miles of trails, this park attracts dog walkers and distance cyclists. “Pennypack is enormous," Stier says. "It runs through so many different neighborhoods in Northeast Philly." Centrally located in the community, the Mayfair Recreation Center is mainly used for youth league basketball games and community meetings. Outside of the rec center, there’s a neighborhood playground and baseball diamond.
