Nicetown

Several local organizations and community centers promote community engagement
Nicetown has several neighborhood-based organizations that promote community engagement. Children in the area are part of the Shane Victorino Nicetown Boys & Girls Club. The facility, more than 100 years old, was revamped thanks to the former Philadelphia Phillies star. The club features an updated indoor basketball court, gym, study area, computer lab and more. Core programs include the Literacy Initiative, which helps bridge the educational gap, and the Triple Play Program, which supports children's health. The Hunting Park Recreation Center is a nearby community gathering point where locals play basketball, tennis, and swim during the summer. The recreation center's surrounding eponymous park has ample green space and walking trails. Families bring their kids to Nicetown Park, which has a playground and a small green space.Housing mainly comprises established brick row homes
Nicetown features traditional Philadelphia-style row homes built between 1920 and 1950. Some areas feature blocks of colorful row homes with front doors against the sidewalk. But most homes have classic, red-brick facades with second-story bay windows. Buyers will also find larger three-story row homes with covered porches. Nicetown's row homes typically come with small 100-square-foot fenced-in backyards. While most homes require street parking, a development of row homes in the neighborhood's southside features driveways. "A lot of properties are starting to be renovated," says Realtor Phil Cavalcanto of Coldwell Banker Realty. Cavalcanto has sold homes in the area for nearly 20 years. "But prices are still more affordable than other neighborhoods in Philly. There hasn't been an overwhelming increase in prices." Prices range from about $50,000 to $300,000.High school games at Marcus Foster Memorial Stadium
The School District of Philadelphia earns an overall C-plus on Niche and serves nearly 119,000 students. Edward T. Steel Public School and Simon Gratz Mastery Charter have an overall C-minus on Niche. The charter school serves ninth through twelfth-grade students, providing opportunities to earn college credits and industry certifications in communications technology, healthcare and culinary arts. Several of the school's sports teams play at Marcus Foster Memorial Stadium, where locals cheer on the Bulldogs or stop by to exercise on the track.Residents enjoy several locally owned businesses with a variety of flavors
With Nicetown being a small and compact neighborhood, locals can easily walk to a local restaurant or small market. "There are a lot of local restaurants in this area. Residents like to support their local businesses here," Cavalcanto says. A local favorite is Paprika, known for its various Halal dishes. Or, residents grab a plate from Rally's, a popular Jamaican spot. And Danny's Wok is popular for Chinese takeout. Residents also enjoy wings and a drink at Barcode Lounge & Restaurant or grab a cocktail and try the famous salmon cheese fries at Tashia's. And Timeout Sports Bar is a local favorite that's been around for some time. For groceries and other household needs, residents head to Save-a-Lot and Dollar Tree in the same small shopping center.SEPTA buses and nearby train stations
US Routes 1 and 13 run directly through town, and Center City is a five-mile straight shot down Broad Street. Locals also commonly use public transportation to get around. SEPTA buses shuttle across the city, and bus stops are on almost every block. Locals can hop on the train at the Hunting Park Station. Temple University Hospital is just over a mile from Nicetown. The Philadelphia International Airport is about 16 miles away if locals need to catch a flight.Crime
The CAP Index Crime Score is an eight out of 10, which is higher than the American average of four out of 10.
