A centrally-located Philadelphia neighborhood
With a moniker rooted in history, Passyunk Square marks a geographic midpoint between Center City and the Philadelphia Sports Complex. Residents of the neighborhood are about 2 miles south of the former and about 2 miles north of the latter, meaning plans in the city or cheering on their favorite teams are roughly equal distances away.
The area gets its name from a Lenape word for an area township about 200 years ago, and is presently home to a number of townhouses lining its streets; the residential landscape is only broken up by two large parks and an ACME Markets location that adds grocery-shopping convenience for residents. Be prepared to be entrenched in history,” a local says. “It really is a town where history is at the epicenter, and the people here have a blue-collar edge to them and feel like they’re the underdogs. That’s really the vibe of the city. Everybody has that chip on their shoulder.”
A point of pride for Philadelphians is the variety of neighborhoods that reside within the city, and Passyunk Square is just one piece of a larger societal landscape. “There’s a neighborhood for everyone,” says Mike Faber, a Realtor with Keller Williams Empower. “Whatever interest you have, there’s a subset neighborhood for that. Whether you’re looking to go out clubbing, looking for a nice dinner or for the more hipster scenes and bars, there’s a neighborhood pocket for that.”

Famous culinary creations and restaurant variety
Cheesesteaks are a hallmark of the Philadelphia food scene, and Passyunk Square is no exception for the culinary staple’s outlets. “There are several really good cheesesteak joints in the city that the locals go to,” a resident of Philadelphia says. “Pat’s and Geno’s are the tourist places. There’s a rivalry there.” The dueling shops sit on opposite sides of 9th Street, with Geno’s neon signage blazing forth south of Pat’s location. “You could walk from one to the other and not have your cheesesteak finished by the time you get in line for the other,” Elstone says, “and both of them have a line.” Up the road, Angelo’s Pizzeria is the area’s most famous cheesesteak stop. Many other restaurants sit on East Passyunk Avenue, including ice cream shops, breweries and coffee shops.
Immediately north of Passyunk Square is the South 9th Street Italian Market, a hub of international food with outdoor dining, carts, shops and more. “Any shop that you could want or need is there,” says Sean Elstone, a Realtor with Keller Williams Main Line Realty. “My favorite is Fante’s, a specialty cookware shop. When I come down here and just want to spend a few hours for myself, I go to the Italian Market.” Other international stops include Casablanca Mediterranean Grill and Grand Palace Restaurant, while nightcaps are poured at Grumpy’s Tavern and the Triangle Tavern. Grocery shoppers head to an ACME Markets near the center of the neighborhood, or a Sprouts just off the northwestern corner of Passyunk Square.

Brick facades of rowhouses line Passyunk Square
Rowhouses are the defining feature of Passyunk Square’s landscape and much of the surrounding Philadelphia area. Prices often range between $300,000 and $500,000, but largely depend on square footage and amenities. The area has a CAP crime score of 4, equivalent to the national average.

Sporting events, weekend outings and more
Sports fans in Philadelphia have convenient access to cheering their teams on. The Philadelphia Sports Complex sits about two miles south of Passyunk Square, accessible via car or rail. “Broad & Pattison is where you get out for all the stadiums,” Elstone says. “There’s three stadiums for four teams. There are certain bars that are great for watching sports.” One of the bars is Xfinity Live!, situated within the sports complex and accommodating sports fans who aren’t in the stands.
Outside of Eagles, Phillies, 76ers and Flyers games taking place depending on season, residents have no shortage of activities in and around Center City. “I feel like every weekend in Philly, there are just things happening all the time,” an employee of The Breakfast Den says. “There are street festivals, food festivals, just all kinds of things. There’s always something here to do.”
