Residents visit community parks like Elmwood Park
Harrell says that neighborhood parks, Suffolk Park and Elmwood Park, are a big part of the Southwest Philadelphia community. Elmwood Park is a 7-acre passive green space with natural trees and paved paths leading to a sculpture in the center. Here, you'll find a unique tribute to American workers. The art installation features blue paving and grey brick reminiscent of the denim clothing worn by laborers of previous generations. Atop the jean-colored stone are cast bronze work button tables with historic quips detailing events within labor history. The piece was commissioned by the city and erected through a joint effort by a local artist, The Friends of Elmwood Park, and the Association for Public Art. Toward the south is Suffolk Park, a well-loved neighborhood gathering space with a small playground and athletic fields. These fields often attract local sporting leagues and friendly matches among residents.
