Port Richmond
Renovating and investing in blocks of rowhomes
Made up of gridded blocks of rowhomes, Port Richmond’s narrow residential streets are reminiscent of the neighborhood’s horse-and-buggy days. Today, close quarters and tight street parking are the norm. Investment properties typically range in price from $40,000 to $100,000, while renovated homes go for between $300,000 and $700,000. These dwellings may not have front yards, but some flaunt backyard space fitted with grassy patches, pools or cement flooring for storage and potted plants. Some even offer a small front porch space or steps distinguishing homes from the sidewalks below. According to real estate agent Marie Collins, of JG Real Estate, the community takes good care of their stomping grounds. “There’s a lot of neighborhood pride,” says Collins, “Homes are well-maintained, the streets are clean. They take good care of it.”Czerw’s Polish Kielbasa and other local institutions
Mingled between rowhomes are local businesses using them to set up shop. “It’s an up-and-coming neighborhood,” Collins says, “It’s going through a transition where you’re seeing more and more restaurants and businesses popping up.” Eateries like Czerw’s Polish Kielbasa are an ode to Port Richmond’s Polish roots. A local institution open for more than 80 years, Czerw’s traditionally smoked kielbasa and perogies are the stuff of legends. Residents can stop at Gaul & Co. Malt House for classic pub comfort food in a rustic ambiance, or Her Daughters, a family-owned café in the heart of the community serving up hot coffee and breakfast. Aramingo Crossings offers Walmart Supercenter, Lidl and Lowe’s for all the essentials, though a handful of corner stores are practically walkable from most residences.Port Richmond Pierogi Fest
Just 5 miles from Center City, residents of Port Richmond are well-positioned to enjoy Philadelphia’s classic annual events like the Thanksgiving Day Parade, Philly Beer Week and Chinese Lantern Festival. But closer to home, Pierogi Fest attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Campbell Square in celebration of Port Richmond’s Polish community. From live music to craft vendors and endless servings of pierogies, the festival is just one of many ways in which Philly honors its historically diverse population.Divided between two school district catchments
Students are zoned for The School District of Philadelphia. The neighborhood is divided between two separate catchments, meaning some will begin at Bridesburg School and others at Richmond School. The former earns a C-minus on Niche, enrolling kindergarten through eighth grade, while the latter earns a C on Niche and enrolls grades K-5. Intermediate students who attend D-plus-rated Memphis Street Academy Charter School at JP Jones will complete their studies at Kensington High School. With a C-minus on Niche, Kensington High offers a Career and Technical Education (CTE) paired with its standard curriculum. Bridesburg students attend C-minus-rated Frankford High School, known for its highly-ranked culinary arts program.Port Richmond’s green spaces and play areas
Residents of Port Richmond have plenty of opportunities to escape the concrete, particularly at Campbell Square Park. The last green space to retain its original design from the 19th century, Campbell Square is a hub for local events, domino games, dog-walking and tag. Powers Park sits next door to the Richmond Library, a solemn space to sit down with rented books. Families enjoy Samuels Playground for its eclectic equipment and basketball court, while Cohocksink Recreation Center offers a grander scale of ball courts, fields, play areas and a community pool. Meanwhile, fishermen and nature lovers head to General Pulaski Park for the scenic landscape of the Delaware River.Reaching Center City
Locals take Interstate 95 when commuting to Center City, while Philadelphia International Airport remains about 15 miles south. SEPTA offers bus routes throughout the neighborhood, as well as a trolley taking residents all the way to West Philly. The closest emergency room is at Temple University Hospital, only 3 miles west on West Allegheny Avenue. The university itself is about 4 miles in the same direction, a hot spot in the North Philadelphia area surrounded by casual eats and amenities. Residents can also find subway stations along Kensington Avenue, less than a mile from most homes.
