Tacony
Fink's Hoagies has gourmet sandwiches
While Fink is a long-standing pillar of the community with a list of exploits, his current venture is as one of the best sandwich makers in the neighborhood. Aptly named Fink’s Hoagies, the sandwich shop has appeared on TasteAtlas and Fox 29 Philly as a must-try location. “My wife and I opened the shop in 2005,” says Fink, “initially it was meant as a post-retirement project, but pretty quickly, we blew up beyond what we could have expected.” When asked about his menu, Fink says he loves to experiment. “I like to explore what I can do with the ingredients I can get my hands on. If I like it, it goes on the menu.” When residents need groceries, they can shop at the stores sat at the community’s many street corners such as The Queen Grocer or J&J Corner Store. Big box shopping can be done downtown at Market Place East, 6 miles southwest on Market Street. This neighborhood's parks are always in reach
Those wanting to enjoy the outdoors can walk to one of seven local parks positioned across the street from the neighborhood's densest areas. Three of these seven parks: Tony Trujillo Park, Disston Park and Christa Lewis Memorial Park, are all arranged in a single strip stretching across the southeast edge of the community. Combined, the three are Tacony’s largest park, separated only by the streets that run through it. Parkgoers can lounge on the area’s lush grass as little league players crack bats on the baseball fields and dogs dig and tussle at the nearby dog park.Homes here are from the 1950s
As a historic neighborhood, Tacony has a median construction year of 1950, with many of its older buildings being from the early 1900s. The neighborhood’s gridded streets are lined with brick townhouses with yards no bigger than a few dozen square feet at either end. Styles can include Federal and Italianate. Prices in the area range from $150,000 to $400,000.
Lincoln Highschool has plenty of athletic opprotunities
Young students can start their education at Hamilton Disston School, on Cottage Street, which teaches kindergarten through eighth grades and earns a C-minus from Niche. Seeing students the rest of the way to graduation, Lincoln High School sits off Rowland Avenue, about a half mile northeast of the neighborhood. The school shares a campus with Austin Meehan Middle School and Northeast Community Propel Academy, meaning students have access to multiple baseball fields, track and field, a pool and multiple tennis courts. Niche gives Lincoln High a C grade.
The local train station is a walk away from many homes
Blocks vary in size in Tacony, with densely packed homes sitting on smaller blocks, while larger homes get more space. This street plan, along with sidewalks on every street, which allows locals to complete many of their errands on foot. Those wanting to travel out of the community can walk down Disston Street, where the Tacony Train Station can take them downtown or to Trenton, New Jersey. Alternatively, drivers can take the Delaware Expressway right next to the station.
The art center has community paintings
Tacony is a densely packed community with locals living in close proximity to each other, making for strong bonds that form a cohesive community. Community Paint Day in March is an event held at the Tacony Lab Community Arts Center that spotlights this tight-knit culture, with paint sessions inspired by local stories of the area’s history.
