Yorktown
Well-maintained midcentury rowhomes connected to Philly amenities
Spacious rowhomes are the predominant feature in Yorktown, most of which were built in the 1960s. Many of these homes feature contemporary interior renovations. Prices for rowhomes in the community range from $200,000 to $400,000, depending on the level of updates done. Realtor Ray Caceres, president of Penn Liberty Real Estate, says, “The homes are in good shape. They’re not as old as homes in other Philadelphia neighborhoods so people have been living there forever. There’s no reason to move.” Also, unlike many other neighborhoods in the city, you don’t have to park in the street because most homes come with driveways, attached garages or private parking lots. “It’s one of the most affordable spots in the city,” says Caceres. “That’s the best thing about it – affordability and living in the city.”Students attend The School District of Philadelphia
Students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade can attend Paul Laurence Dunbar School, a four-story school built in 1932, added to the National Register of Historic Places, and located amid Temple University schools. Students can go on to Benjamin Franklin High School, located closer to Center City. There, students can personalize their education with career and technical education programs like design and culinary arts. Both schools earn an overall C-minus on Niche and score a higher rating of B-minus for their teachers.Close to outdoor spaces like Dendy Recreation Center
Dendy Recreation Center is nearby, offering a pool and a splash pad. There is also a playground and basketball courts. The recreation center features a mural of Marie Dendy, who, according to Mural Arts Philadelphia, was an “extraordinary neighborhood leader who devoted her life to improving her community.” Residents are also just 5 miles from Fairmount Park, one of the city’s largest outdoor spaces. There are wooded trails, expansive play areas, a playhouse and even an amphitheater, all on the banks of the Schuylkill River.Yorktown borders busy Girard Avenue and Broad Street
West Girard Avenue is home to a variety of local restaurants, including Larry’s Steaks, the most popular spot in the neighborhood for a cheesesteak and other comfort foods. Residents can hop on the Market-Frankford Line (known locally as the El) and quickly get to the several other local shops and restaurants that line West Girard Avenue or West Philadelphia. For a more commercialized experience, residents can get to Broad Street. For groceries and basic necessities, residents can head to The Fresh Grocer, a large supermarket conveniently open until midnight. Broad Street is also home to large shopping centers with a mix of local restaurants and national chains as well as an AMC theater. For entertainment, residents can head just a few blocks down Broad Street to get to The Met or take the train or bus down to Spring Garden Street to get to Union Transfer or Franklin Music Hall.Commuting from Yorktown
Along with the SEPTA light rail line, residents can get around town on a bus or subway. There’s a subway station on the corner of North Broad Street and West Girard Avenue, so residents may commute to Center City or other Philly neighborhoods like Fishtown. The community is within walking distance from Temple University, so it’s accessible for faculty or staff who want to live close to the school. The nearest medical center is at Temple University Hospital. Yorktown is just 12 miles from the Philadelphia International Airport, making it easy to connect to the nearby cities and beyond.
