Planned residential communities in Northern Phoenix
North Gateway is a sprawling residential area within the Sonoran Desert, about 27 miles north of downtown Phoenix. Interstate 17 splits the neighborhood into two areas, with expansive open spaces, a semiconductor plant and tourist attractions to the west, and several master-planned communities to the east. Parks and commercial centers are scattered throughout the area’s landscape of subdivisions. “There are a lot of draws to living here. There’s good freeway access, good schools and ample shopping and dining. You’ve got just about everything you’d ever need in the area,” says Real Estate Agent Kirsten Myers with RE/MAX Fine Properties, who has over 20 years of experience.

Subdivisions of single-family homes and apartments
North Gateway is comprised of multiple subdivisions: Tramonto, Amber Hills, Sonoran Foothills and Norterra, to name a few. “There are a lot of different housing options. Some of the communities are planned and have pools and gyms, and others are gated and more private,” Myers says. “There’s also a lot of building going on, with apartments going up in the area.” About two-thirds of residents own their homes, while the rest are renters.
Most residential properties in the neighborhood were built in the 2000s and 2010s. Contemporary single-story homes are common, alongside single and multi-story Spanish Revivals with tiled roofs. Prices range from $675,000 to $950,000. Multi-story new traditional homes and Craftsmen cost between $550,000 and $1 million. These houses have traditional adobe exteriors with clay siding and stucco roofs, plus the occasional stone accent. Multi-story townhouses with adobe exteriors go for $350,000 to $500,000.
Apartment units can range from $1,100 to $2,500 a month, depending on the number of bedrooms. Complexes in the area include Nova North Valley, Cielo At Tramonto and The Pace ad Sonoran Trails.

Neighborhood parks and trails within the Sonoran Preserve
Pocket parks are scattered throughout North Gateway’s subdivisions. Tramonto Park is one of the larger ones, with a playground and sports courts for basketball and volleyball. Pathways for walking loop around the green space. Roy Rogers Park also has a playground and picnic area, while Steed Ridge Basin Park is a large open field with benches. Directly south of the neighborhood is the Deem Hills Recreation area, which takes up 1,000 acres of the Sonoran Desert. There’s a playground, a dog park and multiple courts for basketball, pickleball and tennis. Surrounding North Gateway to the east is the Sonoran Preserve, an open desert park with miles of hiking and biking trails. Residents in Norterra can access the Desert Vista Trailhead, which connects to the Hawk’s Nest Trail and the Desert Tortoise Trail. Multiple neighborhoods along the Sonoran Preserve can access the Dixie Mountain Loop. Other hiking opportunities include the Desert Hills Trailhead and the Paseo Pathway. Most of these dirt paths carve through the desert, past fields of cacti. “Since we’re close to so many trails, it’s a fairly active community – when it’s not a hundred degrees, of course,” Myers says. Lake Pleasant is about 11 miles north for water recreation such as boating and fishing.
