Close to the foothills with many local events

In Pickens, locals enjoy the quiet, slow-paced atmosphere near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. "It has that laid-back, small-town feel," says Missy Rick, Realtor with Allen Tate Realtors, who has serviced Pickens for more than 20 years. "It's a beautiful area in the country with walking trails while close to the amenities that everybody wants." Main Street, a walkable one-mile strip with local businesses, can be found in the heart of Pickens, where annual community events are held.

Shop and dine at local stores on Main Street

Residents head to and near Main Street to shop and dine, mostly from local businesses. Ingles is the primary retailer for groceries and other household essentials. For more unique products, shoppers can find antique treasures at Finder's Keepers, handmade home décor at Full Circle and natural foods at Bee Well Honey Natural Market. The market also has a drive-thru coffee shop for those who need some caffeine while on the go. Meanwhile, Coyote Coffee Café is a popular spot to sip specialty brews in a cozy, rustic-chic setting. Main Street is full of multicultural restaurants such as Mikoshi Japanese and Fiesta Grill, a popular Mexican restaurant with bottomless chips and salsa. Burning Brick Tavern is another local favorite where locals can have a fun night of trivia, bingo and karaoke.

Highlighting azaleas and other annual festivals

The Pickens Azalea Festival is one of the most anticipated annual events. The two-day event closes Main Street on the last weekend in April when the azaleas are blooming, featuring an antique car cruise, vendors, live music and more. "It's like a street carnival without all the rides," says Rick. "There's always a big turnout, and it's nice how the whole community comes together like one big family reunion." The Azalea Festival is just one of many events held throughout the year, along with music festivals and holiday parades.

Suburban living close to main street, rural living in the country

Locals who live within 2.5 miles of Main Street find themselves in a leafy, suburban setting. Bungalows and ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s are the most common in this area, ranging from $250,000 to $400,000. They're fixed on quarter-to-half-acre lots close enough to each other to greet neighbors. Further away into the countryside, single-family homes become sparse, resting on acres of open and woodsy land. A three-to-four-bedroom home on one to two acres sells for around $450,000 to $550,000, while a similar home on 25 acres can reach $1 to $1.3 million.

Parks and rail-trail adventures

Jaycee Park is a major draw for kids, whether they're climbing on the playground equipment made of tires or playing on the baseball and football fields through local leagues. Residents can also play tennis on the two lighted courts, have get-togethers under the pavilion and hike by the trickling waters on the Town Creek Trail. Locals also enjoy going for walks, jogs and bike rides on the 8.5-mile Doodle Trail, a scenic paved pathway that runs along an old railroad to Easley.
