Oak Ridge is convenient to employers, shopping south of Orlando

Oak Ridge offers a convenient city lifestyle less than 10 miles south of downtown Orlando, near top regional employers like Oshkosh AeroTech and Mitsubishi Power Americas. Major shopping destinations, including The Florida Mall and The Mall at Millenia, are also close. “It could be called the Millenia area. The mall is right there,” says Realtor Drew Oquendo of eXp Realty’s Figueroa Team, an Orlando local with a decade of real estate experience. “It’s more middle-class than a high-end area, with a good mix of rentals and people who bought a house there and kept it in the family forever. It’s good for people looking for affordable living and a super easy commute,” he says.

A mix of single-family homes and condos

Cottage and ranch-style single-family homes typically sell for between $190,000 and $395,000. Condo units in pastel-hued stucco buildings tend to range from $90,000 to about $260,000. Many of the winding streets are lined with narrow sidewalks, shaded with oaks and crepe myrtles.

Oak Ridge is less flood-prone than coastal Florida and lakefront sections of Orange County, though high water and wind damage are risks during hurricane season. Winters here are mild, while summers are hot and humid.

Highly rated Orange County Public Schools

Oak Ridge is zoned to Orange County Public Schools, which gets an A-minus from Niche. The district is the eighth largest in the country, and serves more than 200,000 students with a 21-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Controlled open enrollment is available. Zoned schools vary by address, but students may go to Millennia Gardens Elementary and Westridge Middle, both of which get C-plus Niche grades. Older students may continue to B-rated Oak Ridge High. The high school offers dual enrollment classes at Orange Technical College and Valencia College. Oak Ridge High also offers Career & Technical Education programs in subjects such as digital media, animal science and hospitality.

Close to Orlando metro malls and mom-and-pop restaurants

The Mall at Millenia, Orlando International Premium Outlets and The Florida Mall are within about 4 miles of most homes. Big box retailers, including IKEA and Walmart Supercenter, as well as grocery stores, like Publix and Seabra Foods, are also nearby. Oak Ridge Road is lined with popular mom-and-pop Mexican and Latin American eateries, such as Mariscos Los Pulpos and Casa De Las Empanadas Restaurant & Bakery. The commercial district around The Florida Mall has more dining options. La Granja, a Peruvian spot, has been around for over 30 years. Adega Gaucha, down the road, is an award-winning Brazilian steakhouse.

Outdoor recreation at Belle Isle and Lake Jessamine

The Oak Ridge Neighborhood Center operates out of an elementary school in nearby Pine Castle, providing health and educational services like an emergency food pantry and adult literacy programs. While some of Oak Ridge’s subdivisions have pocket parks with playgrounds, locals often drive to Belle Isle and Lake Jessamine for outdoor recreation. The 90-acre Cypress Grove Park, on Lake Jessamine, has a Gilded Age mansion, a playground, a cricket pitch and other outdoor recreational amenities. Universal Studios, Disney World and SeaWorld are within 15 miles of most homes.

Florida’s Turnpike, I-4 Expressway connect around Orange County

Florida’s Turnpike and the I-4 Expressway are just west of Oak Ridge. Outside of rush hour, the drive into downtown Orlando can take under 20 minutes on the expressway. “Rush hour is pretty bad, but similar to any big city,” Oquendo says. Despite the heavy traffic, he says that Oak Ridge is a convenient part of the metro. “It’s centrally located, you can get anywhere really easily.” LYNX provides bus service to the area, with routes running from Oak Ridge Road to the outlet mall and Orlando International Airport, about 12 miles away. Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital is less than 10 miles southwest, an under-30-minute drive in light traffic.
