Moore County calm, Seven Lakes and Pinehurst convenience
Jackson Springs is a small crossroads community in Moore County, west of Pinehurst. It’s named for William Jackson and the freshwater spring he found here in the late 18th century. By the early 20th century, Jackson Springs had become a bustling town, known for its mineral water. In fact, at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Jackson Springs’ mineral water was judged the second-best medicinal water in the country. But following a fire that destroyed the budding resort town’s hotel and the start of the Great Depression, the community fell on hard times. Today, though the dream of becoming a sparkling spa city was never realized, Jackson Springs remains a tranquil retreat for its residents. With shopping, dining and entertainment options galore in Seven Lakes and Pinehurst, both of which are just minutes away, calm doesn’t come at the cost of convenience, either.

Modest homes on large, forested lots
Prices for the modest Minimal Traditional cottages, American Foursquare-style farmhouses and classic ranch-style homes that peek from between thick groves of pine trees run anywhere from $175,000 to about $300,000. Even the upper end of the spectrum is nearly $300,000 below the median sale price for homes in Pinehurst proper, which hovers around the $625,000 mark. But properties here are much larger than properties closer to the town center. Most Jackson Springs homes overlook multiple acres, some sprawl over working farms, others over more woodsy lands.

Highly rated public schools & nature-based learning programs
Local kids are served by the Moore County Public Schools system; many go to West Pine Elementary, West Pine Middle and Pinecrest High. All three schools earn A-minus grades from Niche. Pinecrest boasts the No. 1 spot on Niche’s list of the best public high schools in the county. Realtor Bridget Dineen-Carlson, with Compass, a former resident of nearby Pinehurst, says that Pinecrest’s varsity athletics are “very strong.” In 2024, their men’s golf team won their eighth North Carolina High School Athletic Association title.
Wander & Root offers play-based, nature immersion programs to kids between the ages of four and nine. The nonprofit educational organization is located in north Jackson Springs, on a sprawling 50-acre private homestead.

On the rural edge of golf country
It’s no secret that nearby Pinehurst is known for its golf. “The courses are world-class. If you ask a golfer, they will know what Pinehurst is. It’s just as famous as Myrtle Beach or Pebble Beach,” says Schaefer. Pinehurst Resort’s No. 2 course hosted the U.S. Open in 2024, and will host the championships again in 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047. Closer to home, though, the Jackson Springs Community Club meets on the second Monday of each month in their clubhouse off of Mill Road. The Jackson Springs Depot stands less than a mile south down the street. The building, restored in the early 2000s, used to be a working train depot during the area’s heyday at the start of the 20th century. Today, it’s a familiar local landmark at the crossroads of Hotel Street and North Carolina Highway 73.

Everyday essentials in Seven Lakes
For the weekly grocery shop, locals can visit the Food Lion off Seven Lakes Drive, about 7 miles northwest. There’s a Dollar General just down the road, as well as several doctors’ offices, including Seven Lakes Dentist, Sandhills Pediatrics and Seven Lakes Eye Care. Boutiques and home décor stores are scattered around the vicinity, too, along with a string of both chain restaurants and more locally flavored eateries. Lake House Bar & Grill serves classic sports bar fare in a casual, coastal-inspired setting. At DeLucia’s Bake Shop, locals can pick up a fresh loaf of bread, or sweet treats ranging from cakes and cannoli.

Country roads lead home
North Carolina Highway 73 meanders diagonally through the middle of Jackson Springs. The shady, two-lane thoroughfare connects northeast to West End and southwest to Wind Blow, two similarly small, unincorporated crossroads communities. Interstate 74 runs north-south, about 7 miles west of home. But it’s not necessary to hop on the interstate to visit Pinehurst, about 11 miles east of home. The drive typically takes just 15 minutes via Jackson Springs Road and Foxfire Road. The drive to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, at the heart of Pinehurst, is just as short. “FirstHealth provides a really good healthcare system,” says Schaefer, adding that not only is the hospital a major employer in the area but it’s also well-known for its oncology and heart centers. “It’s great, because you don’t have to go all the way up to Duke for things like that anymore.”
