New Traditionals and colonial-style homes along Legacy Falls Drive
The only entrance into Legacy at Jordan Lakes is off Big Woods Road, where meticulous landscaping and a decorative stone welcome sign coordinate with many of the properties found within the gated community. After scanning past the guard post, residents make their way along Legacy Way, passing a charming waterfall. A sidewalk lines the residential Legacy Falls Drive as it weaves further into the neighborhood, where oak and magnolia trees dot lawns and open green space. Common housing styles include New Traditionals and Colonial-inspired estates, some with French Provisional influences and others with more Craftsman-themed elements. These single-family properties, built between 2013 and 2020, feature two-car garages and offer between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet of interior space. Price tags begin around $625,000 and rise to upwards of $1.2 million for a home on almost an acre. The Legacy’s HOA fees are around $200 monthly, covering community amenities that include a fitness center, tennis courts, an outdoor pool and a playground. “There’s a semi-private golf course, too, as well as a driving range,” says Lucas Mowl, Head Golf Professional at The Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club, referring to the hidden 18-hole course that begins at the clubhouse.Attending Chatham County Schools and nearby UNC Chapel Hill
Legacy students are served by Chatham County Schools, which receives a B-plus rating from Niche. The district has won Best Communities for Music Education from the NAMM Foundation for six consecutive years, and in 2024, it was one of only two school districts statewide to be recognized. Students can begin at North Chatham Elementary before transitioning to Margaret B. Pollard Middle, both of which receive an A-minus. They can then advance to Northwood High, which holds a B-plus.About 15 miles north of Legacy, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public institution renowned for its athletics and healthcare studies programs. The university enrolls around 30,000 students each year.
Golfing at The Preserve and summers well-spent on Jordan Lake
In addition to the golf course within Legacy, residents can become members of The Preserve Golf Club, a more well-known semi-private golf course with a restaurant that specializes in chicken salad. “We have an 18-hole course, a full driving range and practice facility, and we do junior camps over the summer,” says Mowl. “Outsiders sometimes come to The Grille, but it mainly caters to golfers.”Jordan Lake is more than a scenic view for residents driving along Big Woods Road. The man-made reservoir is part of Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, which features more than 1,000 campsites, 15 miles of hiking trails and several boat ramps throughout the park. The nearest boat ramp for Legacy residents can be found about 3 miles south of the neighborhood at Seaforth Beach, where there are sandy shores, a volleyball court, a playground and nature trails. Jordan Lake is well-known to be the summer home for bald eagles, and there are observation decks throughout the shoreline. There is an amphitheater on-site where shows are often held during the warmer months, although there are no summer concerts lined up for the 2025 season. The state park hosts the annual Jordan Lake Freedom Fest, which celebrates Independence Day with live music, food trucks and a fireworks show over the lake.
Taking Route 501 to Chapel Hill and Route 64 to Raleigh
The two-lane Big Woods Road is the only way for residents to get in and out of the community. The road winds along Jordan Lake, connecting to U.S. Route 64 a mile to the south and to U.S. Route 501 about 8 miles to the north. Once on Route 64, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is a 25-mile drive east, and on Route 501, Chapel Hill is a 15-mile trip north. The area is car-dependent, as the public bus and train services only operate closer to Chapel Hill.Boutique shopping and trendy dining in Fearrington Village
For shopping and dining excursions, residents will need to take Big Woods Road about 8 miles north to Fearrington. Along with a Food Lion, there’s Fearrington Village, a quaint and trendy downtown area located just off U.S. Route 501. The Belted Goat is a coffee and breakfast bistro with patio seating, and The Fearrington House Restaurant offers an upscale seasonal menu in a historic colonial-style establishment. Next door, McIntyre’s Books has literature for ages ranging from children to adults, as well as other niche boutique items.
