Historic commercial corridor is the heart of the neighborhood
One of Pittsburgh’s largest residential communities, the South Hills community of Brookline is known for its historic commercial corridor that has been satisfying the neighborhood’s needs since 1905, three years before it was annexed into the city. Today, more than 13,000 residents are served by Brookline Boulevard, which epitomizes the neighborhood motto of “Character, Charm, Convenience.” Located less than 4 miles from the heart of the city, the neighborhood provides residents with easy access to use of the light rail commuter line that runs through neighboring Beechview. “You’ve got that main artery which gives you a small-town feel, but you still have easy access to get downtown,” says Michael Pohlot, a Realtor with Janus Realty Advisors. “It’s more of a walkable suburb compared to Beechview.”

Everything happens on Brookline Boulevard
Brookline Boulevard today is home to nearly 100 businesses, and the corridor hosts both of the neighborhood’s big annual events. Breezefest is a street fair that features live music, craft vendors and children’s activities. The Brookline Food Tour showcases the neighborhood’s culinary diversity as part of the ‘Burgh Bits & Bites festivities. Well-known dining destinations include Oak Hill Post, a highly rated American eatery, and Pitaland, a popular Mediterranean bakery. “They actually sell to local grocery stores,” Pohlot says. The boulevard’s many eateries mingle with ice cream shops, coffee houses, ethnic markets and unique businesses such as Geekadrome, a comic book and gaming store. Red’s Good News is one of several bars that supports neighborhood nightlife. The boulevard also is home to a branch of the Carnegie Library that has been in operation since 1930. After an extensive renovation that was completed in 2004, the branch was named Library of the Year by the American Institute of Architects and the American Library Association. More dining and retail options are available elsewhere in the neighborhood. Fiori’s Pizzeria is a featured stop along an alternate commercial corridor that forms the neighborhood’s western border with Beechview. “That’s one of the top pizza shops in all of Pittsburgh,” Pohlot says. “Top three for most people.” Just outside the neighborhood is an Aldi, one of the few full-service grocery stores in the area.

Large established homes highlight the residential variety
An eclectic mix of established homes graces the neighborhood’s streets, with Colonial-inspired homes standing out among the many brick dwellings. Overall, Brookline is home to a wide variety of styles. Cape Cods, Tudors and Craftsman-inspired cottages illustrate the architectural diversity. Sloped front yards leading to large, welcoming porches are common among the established homes, typically built close together. Raised ranches and bi-levels on more spacious lots provide contemporary options. Prices typically range from $100,000 to $400,000.

Public, private and special schools are available
Students can attend Brookline K-8, a neighborhood school, and nearby Brashear High, both C-plus-rated schools by Niche. The high school features a Teaching Academy Magnet program and uses grant money to expand its advanced placement offerings. Two other public institutions, the B-minus-rated West Liberty Elementary and Pittsburgh South Brook, a C-rated middle school, are located in the neighborhood. Additional schools within Brookline’s boundaries are St. John Bosco Academy, a private institution that serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and the Pioneer Education Center, which serves a small population of students with special needs.
Pittsburgh Brashear High School is located in Pittsburg's Beechview community.

Year-round hockey rink among several athletic amenities at neighborhood parks
The neighborhood offers its share of recreational options. Brookline Memorial Park is the amenities-filled anchor of neighborhood activity. Several ballfields, a basketball court and a playground are available, but the main attraction is a Dek Hockey rink. “It has plastic flooring so you can play year-round and you don’t need ice,” Pohlot says. “It’s nice because we have an in-between climate here and we just had one of warmest winters ever.” Brookline Memorial Park also is the start and end point for the Brookline Breeze, an annual 5K run that has been held in the neighborhood since 1982. Joseph F. Moore Park, which has been part of the neighborhood since 1939, is a smaller yet similarly traditional green space that features lighted tennis courts.

Pittsburgh International Airport is 20 miles west via I-376, which can be accessed just west of the neighborhood.

I love my neighborhood and what is around it. The ability to walk places is something I really appreciate in my area. The only draw back for me is that there are not very many chain restaurants around.

Relatively safe but the people are rude and entitled. Not a place I enjoy living in. Not a great opportunity for finding employment.
