Dozens of shops and eateries in historic rowhouses line Butler Street and are within walking distance for most residents. “Popular spots include Bar Botanico, Walters BBQ Southern Kitchen and Inkwell Coffee Shop,” Marasti says. Walter’s outdoor patio features fake grass and wooded picnic tables and feels like a backyard barbecue. Smoked brisket and pulled pork are crowd favorites. Marasti also notes that Umami is known for its sushi and Japanese Street food. “And Poulet Blue is one of the best French restaurants around.” French favorites also include La Gourmandine Bakery, known for its fresh pastries and baguettes.
Boutiques range from bohemian stores like Alma Mercantile to The Wild Card, a locally owned gift shop. Florists and art studios are scattered between hair salons and barbershops. “I always get my hair cut at Alchemy Dry Cut Lounge. They’re great at what they do,” Marasti says. Bloomfield Community Market is the closest grocery store, about 1 mile away, and the neighborhood hosts a seasonal farmers market. Familiar retailers like Target and Trader Joe’s are about 3 miles east.

The Pittsburgh Public School District serves the area and is rated a C-plus by Niche. Students may attend C-rated schools like Pittsburgh Arsenal PreK-5 and Pittsburgh Arsenal 6-8. Both schools sit on the same hill as the former Allegheny Arsenal, a historic manufacturing center. Pittsburgh Milliones 6-12 is a University Preparatory School with small class sizes. I feel very safe in the neighborhood. I have not witnessed or heard of much crime. My neighbors all look out for each other and if something suspicious is occurring, the neighbors on the block make their presence known.
