Retail locations and eateries are available on Penn Avenue. Commonplace Coffee serves breakfast and lunch items with handcrafted espresso drinks to start the day. Spork offers New American dishes in a contemporary interior, warmly lit by chandeliers. Residents craving Italian head to Fish Nor Fowl, an upscale restaurant with a vibrant plant wall and deck seating ideal for lunch with friends. For a casual afternoon meal or a night out, Lot 17 on Liberty Avenue serves American diner and bar food in a modern barn house atmosphere. Next door, Tessaro’s American Bar and Hardwood Grill is known for its home fries and burgers. Groceries are available at the local Aldi and Whole Foods.Vintage homes starting at $500,000
Friendship is a walkable neighborhood with a residential feel. Homes are built closer together, and most have small slanted front yards. The community is known for its large, grand single-family homes showcased during the Friendship House Tour. The Friendship Community Group runs the annual house tour in October, showcasing the neighborhood's antique and highly detailed builds. Tour participants see homes in the Victorian, Edwardian, Queen Anne and Foursquare styles. Most homes were built around 1910, with colorful brick exteriors, high-pitched roofs, ornate detailing and front porches. “If you want a large spacious home, you have options,” says Mullen. “Many of the homes have been transformed into apartment buildings.” Most locals rent their homes, while only 14% of residents are homeowners. Homes range from $500,000 to a million for renovated historic dwellings.Baum Grove Parklet and The Octopus Garden
Baum Grove Parklet has tree-shaded walking paths, benches and tables for an afternoon picnic. At the parklet, the Friendship Community Group hosts volunteer meetings and works with the community to maintain the park. The group also worked with the City of Pittsburgh to make this intersection more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly. Besides redesigning the intersection's layout, the Asphalt Art at Baum Grove was created, resulting in beautiful artwork full of vibrant colors and floral designs to help guide all commuters to safety. Locals participate in Tai Chi at The Octopus Garden, a community garden with mosaic sculptures of giant sea creatures. Residents may spend a day outside the neighborhood at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium in Highland Park.Little Italy Days and Unblurred
The region's largest heritage festival, Little Italy Days, takes place on Liberty Avenue, filling the street with live Italian music and the smell of melting cheese and baking bread. Visitors watch artists at the Pittsburgh Glass Center create objects and art pieces from molten glass during Unblurred, an art walk held on the first Friday of every month. The Glass Center also offers lessons for residents interested in learning the craft. Residents who attend religious services may visit Grace & Peace Presbyterian Church, Masjid al-Mu’min, East Liberty Presbyterian Church and others within the area.B-plus rated magnet program
Children may attend Pittsburgh Woolslair, which receives a B-plus from Niche, for prekindergarten through fifth grade, and Pittsburgh Milliones, which receives a D-plus, for sixth through twelfth grade and offers university-level preparation in and outside the classroom, including sports and clubs to complement its academics. Pittsburgh Montessori for prekindergarten through fifth grade, which receives a B-plus, is also an option in the neighborhood. “It is one of the only public Montessori schools in the state. It is where my kids go. It is not a charter school, but a public magnet program you have to apply to,” says Sara Leitera, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway.Commuters use Penn Avenue and bus stops
Amenities on Penn Avenue and Liberty Avenue are walkable, and to get around the city, residents head to Friendship Avenue, Baum Boulevard and Penn Avenue for bus stops. The Lincoln Highway cuts through the neighborhood, and residents have access to Route 8. The Pittsburgh International Airport is 22 miles away.
