Live where Bald Eagles Soar
Wild Bald Eagles soar free above gold-touched maple trees along the banks of the Monongahela River. While this may sound like a story from Nat Geo, this is the reality in Hays, a residential neighborhood in east Pittsburgh. The neighborhood is just 6 miles from downtown, yet the area maintains a rural feel due to the heavily forested valleys and hills. Residents are not the only ones who call Hays home, as wildlife sightings are common. “The neighborhood is home to Hays Woods,” says Sara Leitera, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway. “It’s a hidden park with a lot of wildlife.” A pair of nesting Bald Eagles settled in nearby Hays Woods in 2013 and have lived there ever since. The pair have become somewhat famous, and outdoor enthusiasts flock to the area hoping to catch a glimpse.
The Hays Eagles have become a very popular part of the community.

Largest green space in Pittsburgh
Hays Woods is the centerpiece of the neighborhood. This expansive green space is 660 acres of forests, streams, and valleys and is Pittsburgh's largest undeveloped tract of land. The land has a long history of industrial use and was once slated to be developed into a thoroughbred racetrack, but a collective effort of residents and city officials helped Pittsburgh claim official ownership of Hays Woods in 2023, ensuring its status as a protected park. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike the crisscross trails and try to spot some wildlife. The nesting bald eagles have gained celebrity status within the neighborhood as Facebook pages and livestreams of the nest have been created to document their every move. For a different kind of outdoor recreation, residents can head to Sandcastle Water Park, nearby, to float down the lazy river or catch a ride on the Lightning Express.

The event tackles many challenges facing the park, including invasive species management, trail work, park clean-up, and entry-garden care.
