A resourceful community in East Pittsburgh
Homewood West became a popular Pittsburgh neighborhood for African-Americans in the early 1900s, but by the late 1900s, the community was experiencing economic hardship. Today, it's making revitalization strides as a business district 10 miles from downtown. Organizations such as the Young Women’s Christian Association are helping breathe life into this urban community with its family resources and daycare center. The nonprofit Operation Better Block helps people in Homewood, according to Zinna Scott, who has lived in the neighborhood for 42 years and serves as the group's treasurer. “We make sure they have a voice on what’s going on and understand it,” Scott says about the residents. She says she has seen a positive change in the area. The organization has turned three vacant lots into into green spaces. “So many times in the Black community, we don’t get to have input,” Scott says. “This is a way to come into the community and say, 'What would you like to see happen?'” The area has a CAP Index crime score of 5, compared to the national average of 4. Although the violent crime score is 9, the community is working on making the area safer and investing in the neighborhood. In addition, the city has dedicated about $3.5 million into the Homewood Library, says Deanna Davis, a Realtor with Keller William Exclusives, who has been selling homes in the area for nearly two decades.
