In 1955, the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh constructed a public housing project on sequestered, undeveloped land and called it Northview Heights. The name is also used for the housing project’s urban neighborhood, which has simple single-family houses and access to a couple of nearby parks.
North of downtown Pittsburgh, the diverse neighborhood is isolated from other areas and surrounded by woodlands. The housing project dominates most of the urban community, which also has a few streets of single-family homes. The houses have a secluded, suburban feel with tall trees shading sizeable yards and driveways. Prospective buyers can pick between a handful of modest styles like Colonial Revivals with front porches, brick Cape Cods, American Foursquares and ranch-style houses. Depending on the size and conditions of the house, sales prices can range between $98,000 to $188,000.
As for education, students in Northview Heights attend the Pittsburgh Public School District. At Pittsburgh King PreK-8, students attend daily Group Guided Instruction (GGI) to learn social skills in a group setting. According to Niche, Perry High School receives B ratings in teachers and diversity. The school offers three distinct programs including Liberal Arts, Career & Technical Education and Service & Military Science.
Choose between a couple of parks near Northview Heights to spend quality time outdoors. The Northview Heights Playground has a soccer field, a basketball court and a baseball field for athletes. It also has a playground where children can climb and slide. "Residents gather in the park. It’s a close-knit community where everyone knows each other," says Sara Leitera, Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway. At Riverview Park, 251 acres of green space, folks often hike and mountain bike through steep, woodsy trails for heart-racing recreation. Pet owners can take their furry friends to the dog park next to the grand Allegheny Observatory which opened in 1912. “The Riverview Park is pretty. It has the observatory, which is the big thing and explains the name Observatory Hill,” Leitera says. The park also has picnic shelters and a public swimming pool for summertime fun.
To go out to eat, Northview Heights residents has a laidback option nearby. At Hog’s Head Bar and Grill, order the "barbalo" wings covered in homemade BBQ buffalo sauce on wing night. The restaurant has a dimly lit, hometown pub atmosphere ideal for relaxed family dinners, plus big screens around the bar to watch a Steelers game with friends.
About three miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Northview Heights residents can easily commute to the big city. The neighborhood has many bus stops for convenient public transportation to offices or exciting day trips. For downtown adventures, visit Market Square to try a new restaurant or PNC Park to watch a Pirates game. In Northview Heights, residents enjoy a secluded urban neighborhood with simple housing styles and access to local parks.
