An inspiring neighborhood in East Pittsburgh
Life imitates art, but in Point Breeze, art imitates life. This Pittsburgh neighborhood served as the inspiration for Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Dillard’s famous memoir, “An American Childhood.” A quick stroll through Point Breeze, and it's easy to see why. The neighborhood is home to The Frick Pittsburgh, a complex of historical buildings and museums on nearly six acres of gardens and lawns. Housing in Point Breeze is equally historic, as the neighborhood’s varied architectural styles sit on tree-lined streets. “Once people move to Point Breeze, they never leave,” says Maryann Bacharach, resident and Realtor at Howard Hanna Real Estate. “Families always want to return to the neighborhood.”

Historic housing in a competitive market
Point Breeze’s housing styles are as storied and historic as the surrounding neighborhood. “There is very little new construction,” says Bacharach. “Most of the houses date back to the early 1900s.” Brick Tudor- Revivals and midcentury moderns sit on large grassy plots with ample room for dogs or kids to play on the front lawn. Towards the center of Point Breeze, classic American Foursquares can be found tightly packed on heavily forested streets. Smaller contemporary houses sell for around $700,000, while larger, historic Colonial Revivals can reach $1.5 million. “The market in Point Breeze is very competitive,” says Bacharach.
The old growth trees throughout Point Breeze give the homes plenty of shade.

The largest municipal park in Pittsburgh
Frick Park is the largest municipal park in Pittsburgh, and many residents are within walking distance as the park sits along Point Breeze’s southern border. The expansive green space was originally just 151 acres when it was donated to the city by Henry Clay Frick in 1919. Since then, Frick Park has grown into 644 acres of forests, rivers, and hiking trails, with an Environmental Center open to the public. History buffs can head to the Frick Pittsburgh to explore the museum's gardens, art exhibits, and showcases of life during the gilded age. The museum sits in the estate of Pittsburgh Industrialist Henry Clay Frick, and visitors can visit “Clayton,” a well-preserved 23-room mansion from the late 1800s. For more outdoor recreation, residents can head to Mellon Park and work on their backhand at the Mellon Park Tennis Center.

Point Breeze itself is a beautiful area. Close to Chatham University and Shadyside and walking distance from Bakery Square. However, it is close to Wilkinsburg and Homewood, which are not so great areas.
