South Oakland is part of Pittsburgh’s academic and medical hub
South Oakland is one of four neighborhoods in Oakland, a lively community whose award-winning universities and hospitals make it one of Pittsburgh’s leading academic, medical and cultural centers. Less than a mile from the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Presbyterian, it embraces the spirit of youthful innovation that has transformed the Steel City into a global hub for education and healthcare. “UPMC is just a massive conglomerate. Throw that in with Pitt, and South Oakland gets a lot of young academics, medical folks and even faculty,” says Joe Yost, a real estate agent with Compass who has more than 20 years of experience in the industry. “Because of our topography, it can take over an hour to travel 30 miles. That means proximity is huge for these folks who need to get to class or work.”
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is the city’s largest employer, and South Oakland’s riverfront is home to the Pittsburgh Technology Center. With facilities like the Carnegie Mellon Entertainment Technology Center, the PTC is another draw to the neighborhood. “Tech has gotten really big here because of CMU. South Oakland is a great option for these young guys and gals that come in and are working for one of the tech companies,” Yost says. The CMU campus is less than 2 miles from South Oakland, and the neighborhood’s central location makes it a popular spot for students, medical professionals and longtime residents alike.

Densely populated neighborhood with rowhomes and multi-family properties
South Oakland features older rowhomes and detached single-family homes built throughout the early 1900s. The neighborhood is known for its high population density, and most properties sit side-by-side on narrow streets. While sidewalks and public steps allow residents to walk through the neighborhood, its hilly terrain can make it difficult to navigate as there are many steep alleyways and dead-end streets. “There are some parallel lattice streets, but there's just kind of no rhyme or reason to most of them,” Yost says. The area west of Bates Street is known as Oakcliffe, and the city of Pittsburgh considers the subdivision to be part of South Oakland.
Common architectural styles include American Foursquares and Victorian-style homes, some of which have been converted into duplexes or triplexes. “I know people who have bought five or six-bedroom homes and converted them into student housing. There’s a lot of that here, and it’s kind of a madhouse when it comes to rentals,” Yost says. While nearly 80% of residents are renters, the Oakland Planning and Development Corporation reports that South Oakland has one of Oakland’s highest concentrations of homeowners. Home prices typically range from $150,000 to $300,000, although larger investment properties can fetch upwards of $350,000. While the neighborhood’s overall CAP Index crime score of 4 is on par with the national average, scores for certain violent crimes are higher.

Access to neighborhood parks and the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh
There are several small green spaces in South Oakland. Frazier Park has a ballfield, a basketball court and a playground with a spray feature where kids can cool off in the summer. In the neighborhood’s western half, the Oakcliffe Community Playground was updated in 2020 to include a play area with swings, a climbing wall and a basketball court. Residents can access the Three Rivers Heritage Trail by walking less than a mile down towards the Monongahela River, although they must pass under Interstate 376 to get there. South Oakland is also just west of the 456-acre Schenley Park. “We have these nice big green spaces, which is not common for big cities. Those parks do kind of help separate the neighborhood,” Yost says.
Oakland is also a cultural hub, as it is home to two of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh: the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The museums are less than 2 miles from South Oakland and sit next to the main campus of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Community events bring together longtime residents and students
The South Oakland Neighborhood Group hosts an annual fall festival in Frazier Park. The event brings the community together to celebrate the changing seasons with live music, food, local vendors and a bounce house for kids. Pitt’s Office of Engagement and Community Affairs also collaborates with Oakcliffe to host an annual block party that allows longtime residents, community members and off-campus students to interact with one another.

Forbes Avenue is an energetic business district near Pitt
Residents typically head to Forbes Avenue for shopping and dining. The lively thoroughfare is about a mile from South Oakland and runs through the heart of Pitt’s campus. The Pitt Shop is a destination for gameday gear, and drug stores include CVS and Rite Aid. On Bates Street, Groceria Merante is a family-owned spot that supplies the community with grocery essentials, Italian foods and homemade subs. For bigger grocery runs, Aldi and Giant Eagle Supermarket are about 2 miles away in the South Side.
The dining scene on Forbes Avenue highlights flavors from around the globe. Zen’s Noodle House specializes in Japanese ramen, while Primanti Bros. is a Pittsburgh institution known for its specialty sandwiches topped with French fries and coleslaw. Pamela’s Diner is a retro spot serving homestyle breakfast foods, and Dave and Andy’s Homemade Ice Cream is a go-to for dessert.
