A pseudo-suburb in Pittsburgh’s West End
Quiet but central, Westwood is a surprisingly convenient neighborhood in Pittsburgh’s West End. “Even though it’s within Pittsburgh city limits and is right off the Parkway West, Westwood has a small-town suburban feel. People know their neighbors and look after each other,” says Susan Henry, a local Realtor with Howard Hanna. “A lot of people living there work in the city, too. Honestly, Westwood’s proximity to downtown and the airport are its biggest draws.” Access to Interstate 376, known locally as Parkway West, is less than a mile south of this pseudo-suburb. This highway makes the almost 5-mile commute into downtown Pittsburgh a breeze for residents. Westwood residents also benefit from nearby commercial areas, both in and around the community.

Historic starter homes
Westwood’s narrow residential streets slant up and down Pennsylvanian hills, partially lined by sidewalks. Historic homes built as early as 1900 can be found along these streets displaying classic architectural styles, like steeply gabled Tudor Revivals and boxy American Foursquares. Midcentury homes are also in the neighborhood, displaying more typical suburban designs like ranch-style and split-level homes. Colonial Revivals joined the neighborhood around the turn of the century, in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. For the most part, houses in Westwood sit on modest lots, around a quarter of an acre or less. Overall list prices range from $127,000 to $367,000. “It’s a good starter home area,” Henry says. “It’s very reasonably priced for Pittsburgh.”

Westwood Park
For outdoor recreation, residents can hit some fly balls in Westwood Park, a central community spot tucked behind the elementary school. The green space consists of two ball fields and is the home field for the Westwood-Oakwood baseball and softball teams. In the summertime, residents can splash around in the Westwood Swimming Pool, which hosts swim teams and swim classes for adults and children. Small kids can play safely in the separate kiddie pool. Next to the pool, people can grab hot dogs at the concession stand and eat them at picnic tables.

Close to Green Tree
“Westwood is pretty close to a neighborhood called Green Tree,” Henry says. “There are some locally owned businesses like shops and restaurants there.” Green Tree is less than a 2-mile drive south of Westwood. Familiar chains like Starbucks and Einstein Bros can be found in Green Tree as well. Grabbing groceries takes folks to the Giant Eagle Supermarket just outside the neighborhood on McKinney Lane. As for going out to eat, locals can head to the Noble Manor Shopping Center, a strip mall that houses convenient food options.

we really like it. We do not intend to leave here through our retirement. It is convenient and safe. We are close to everything we need: downtown, shopping, entertainment, but nothing is on top of us. The home is a step up from where we came from and we are one of the longest original residetns of the plan.
