Located a few miles from Shreveport, Plain Dealing is a small town, set to expand. “It’s always been a quiet little bedroom community, but that’s changing fast,” says Denny McMullan of McMullan Realty, who has worked as a broker in the area for nearly 40 years. “They're putting in a wood product manufacturing plant opening in 2024, and I expect that to bring more retail and people to the area.” The rural town has neighboring lakes and forested areas, which is ideal for those who enjoy hunting and fishing. The town itself does not have much in the way of retail, but there are stores carrying household necessities and neighboring areas have more extensive shopping.

Ranch-style homes
The median single-family home price in Plain Dealing is just under $200,000. “The prices are really reasonable,” says McMullan. “Many people want to be in Benton, which is much more expensive, so Plain Dealing is the next best thing with access to the same schools.” Most of the homes are ranch-style houses, some with a Cape Cod influence. Houses are located off two-lane highways, but private driveways provide a good deal of space between traffic and the home. Houses sit on large lots and have mature trees on the sizable lawns.
Access to Benton schools
Most kids living in town will go to Plain Dealing High School, which offers prekindergarten through 12th grade and gets a B-minus from Niche. Some kids living in the southern part of the region might go to schools in Benton. Benton Elementary has an A-minus rating on Niche. Benton Middle gets an A, and Benton High has an A-minus. Benton High was noted by Niche as having outstanding teachers and being one of the top schools in Louisiana for athletes.
Country clubs and playgrounds
For recreation, children can head to Plain Dealing Playground to swing or climb on the playground equipment. Parents can pack a lunch, as there are picnic tables available at the park. Lake Plain Dealing and the Red River both provide fishing and kayaking possibilities for locals, and golfers can head to Oakland Plantation Country Club. Oakland Plantation is home to an 18-hole course and is open year-round, weather permitting.
Old school diners and outlet malls
At Chavo’s Mexican Restaurant, diners can expect to be greeted with chips and salsa on the table. The restaurant is a casual spot to grab a quesadilla and margarita in a fun atmosphere. Residents stop by Big Dup’s Cajun Kitchen for a quick order of popcorn shrimp or hushpuppies, and Da Spott is a barbecue restaurant with sauce bottles and paper towels on the tables. Da Spott has local high school football jerseys on the wall showing off the Plain Dealing Pride. Giles Snack Shop is a neighborhood institution for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Steak and eggs is the breakfast specialty, while burgers and tall milkshakes are popular all day at this old-time diner.
There are a couple of nationally recognized chains that are one-stop shops for those looking to grab groceries. Highway 3 is home to a Piggly Wiggly and a Walmart Supercenter. For a full day’s worth of shopping, the Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets are located a few miles south at the intersection of Interstate 20 and Interstate 49. The outlets have dozens of nationally known shops and a good number of local boutiques as well.
Hopping on the SporTran
Locals can jump on the SporTran for free public transportation. The bus system serves all of Bossier Parish County. Highway 3 runs the length of the town from north to south, while Highway 2 does the same from east to west. Interstate 49 is nearby to provide easy access to Shreveport.
