A small northwest Detroit enclave with longstanding allure
With well-preserved homes and meticulously manicured streetscapes, the historic Pleasant Ridge neighborhood of Detroit embodies classic suburban appeal. Covering just .57 miles of land, it might be one of the smallest areas in Michigan but also one of the mightiest for residential satisfaction. “We have a really strong community and a lot of long-standing residents,” says Kara Edwards, a 25-year resident of Pleasant Ridge and Realtor at Jim Shaffer & Associates, serving the Detroit metro area. “People often come back here or move up within the community, and we also have a lot of multi-generational homes.” Like most Pleasant Ridge homes built in the 1930s and 1940s, community organizations also have strong ties here. “We have neighborhood book clubs and garden clubs that have been around for nearly 70 years.” With its rich history, tight-knit feel and quick accessibility to downtown Detroit, Pleasant Ridge is the type of place where residents are happy to stay put.

Historic homes and charming curb appeal
“Pleasant Ridge is known for its charming, architectural appeal,” Edwards says when discussing the housing landscape. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets are beautifully manicured with quaint, paved sidewalks guiding along from one historic property to the next. “We have some smaller, cute 1920s colonials and cottages and then some old, really big and beautiful Tudors.” Other common architectural styles include Craftsman homes and English Tudors, and prices can range from $300,000 at the lower end and up to $1,000,000 for more grand properties.

Small neighborhood with big recreational opportunities
Even for its size, Pleasant Ridge has no shortage of recreational options. “We have a community garden, a dog park and a walking trail that goes all through the east side,” Edwards shares. “We also have outdoor pavilions that can be rented for barbecues or parties, so there’s a lot of recreational ways to benefit from living here.” All residents have access to the community pool and community center, which is a social hotspot for families. Local teens enjoy sharing lifeguard shifts and neighbors use the pool as a common meet-up place. Another outdoor hub is Gainsboro/Victory Park, a popular site with modern playscapes, picnic areas and an outdoor rock-climbing wall. For animal lovers, the Detroit Zoo is conveniently within walking distance for residents to enjoy throughout the year.

Local eats and nearby suburb staples
Residents dine at a few in-town neighborhood establishments that are also within walking distance, such as the Whistle Stop. This corner diner serves up homestyle plates for breakfast and lunch in a vibrant, retro-style space. They specialize in multiple types of benedicts, stuffed French toast and lemon cream blueberry pancakes. Plus, they offer an assortment of fruity brunch drinks and cocktails. Another new favorite that locals are excited to dive into is Romolo Pizza Romana, an Italian restaurant offering authentic Roman-style pizza with a touch of Detroit-inspired items on the menu. While there is no grocery store directly in town, residents head to the Western Market just 1.5 miles away in downtown Ferndale. This smaller market is stocked with health-food items plus delicious bakery items. There’s also a Holiday Market just 2 miles away in Royal Oak, where locals appreciate an abundance of specialty cheeses from around the world and an assortment of high-quality meats along with other grocery staples.

Neighborhood clubs and community center gatherings
The Community Center is home to many special Pleasant Ridge events, including annual and seasonal get-togethers like the Easter Brunch & Egg Hunt and the Daddy Daughter Dance. The center also puts on 50+ club dinners throughout the year and holds various community group-hosted events. One well-established group is the Pleasant Ridge Women’s Club, who often put on trivia nights and fundraisers to help raise money for sending local students to college.

An area focused on public schools
Most children in the area attend public schools, and Pleasant Ridge is a part of the Ferndale public school system, which gets an overall B-minus score from Niche.com. The youngest students can attend Ferndale Upper Elementary School, scoring at a B-minus. For middle schoolers, there’s Ferndale Middle School with a C-score rating, and then Ferndale High School, with a B-plus score for upperclassmen. Ferndale High School offers 17 free varsity sports programs and is well known for its Impi Robotics team, which has received multiple competition awards over the years.

Minutes from nearby burbs and Detroit attractions
“Pleasant Ridge is in an ideal location where you are within a half-mile of downtown Ferndale and Royal Oak,” Edwards says. “If you want to go to downtown Detroit to see a Lions or Tigers game, you can get there in 20 minutes and still live in this cute outside neighborhood, which is pretty remarkable.” Getting to in-town hotspots or nearby suburbs is easy for Pleasant Ridge walkers. Still, there are also a lot of biking paths, including a new 3-mile biking addition along Woodward Avenue for bicycle enthusiasts. The bus system is another option for travelers, as the SMART bus system makes stops in both nearby Ferndale and Royal Oak suburbs and into downtown Detroit.
Pleasant Ridge is just 20 minutes from Downtown Detroit.
