A slower pace of life in Highland
Highland is a highly residential area in the northeast region of Pocatello. The neighborhood primarily consists of single-family housing, parks and many wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including a temple. “It’s a very well-kept neighborhood where there’s a lot of pride of ownership,” says Realtor Amy Tueller with Silvercreek Realty Group, who has 22 years of experience in the area. “It’s on the east side, so you have great views of the city up in the foothills.” With the intersection of interstates 86 and 15 nearby and the historic downtown Pocatello district 5 miles away, residents can experience the quiet of the suburbs without sacrificing accessibility.
Single-family homes dominate the housing market
Buyers will find contemporary ranch-style builds and New Traditional houses along the streets of Highland. Many areas have a suburban feel, with sidewalks lining the densely packed lots. In the hills, away from the interstates, properties have more space and views of the mountains and valleys. Sales in the past few years have closed between $345,000 and $885,000, with newer construction generally representing the higher values of this range. “We’ve had a lot of people coming from California and Texas, selling their mansions for a ton of money and buying really nice properties here for less,” Tueller says. The CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
A strong religious presence in Highland
Faith is a significant component of everyday life in the Highland neighborhood. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has several wards in the area, though the Pocatello Idaho Temple is considered the most sacred. As of 2024, the faith has just 335 temples worldwide. In 2021, the Pocatello Idaho Temple was built and attracted a quarter of a million visitors for its five-week opening. The classical structure, surrounded by grounds full of greenery, is made of white Chinese granite and has a central spire.
Outdoor activities, from mountain biking to local sports leagues
One of the main draws to the Highland area is its wealth of parks. “It’s beautiful,” Tueller says. “The activities you can do outside are endless.” The Portneuf Wellness Complex is the neighborhood's largest recreation space, with an outdoor amphitheater for concerts, a lake with fishing docks and beaches, walking trails and other athletic facilities. The Satterfield Bike Trails lead up into the hills overlooking the city. The Bannock Soccer Complex hosts Portneuf Valley Soccer Club games for players aged 3 through 18, and the Highland Golf Course is open to the public. Sister City Park is another community gathering space with a disc golf course, playground and a pavilion with picnic tables.
Education through the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District
Children living in the northern half of the neighborhood often begin their education at Gate City Elementary, which scores a B-plus from Niche. Edahow Elementary serves the southern half of the area and earns an A-minus rating. Kids then transition to Franklin Middle, with a B-plus, before finishing at B-rated Highland High. Students may apply to schools outside of their zones within the district. High schoolers can also enroll in the Portneuf Valley Technical Education and Career Campus and choose from 21 career and technical education pathways. A-rated Grace Lutheran School provides private education from prekindergarten through eighth grade.
A variety of eats downtown and shopping centers off Yellowstone
Highland sits about 5 miles from historic downtown Pocatello, which houses most of the city's independently owned shops and restaurants, like Brick 243 Gastropub. The Sandpiper is a fine dining spot in the neighborhood known for its steak and seafood. Big-box stores like Ridley’s Family Markets, WinCo Foods and Walmart are within 4 miles of Highland in the many shopping centers off Yellowstone Avenue.
Regional transportation options and health care access
Highland’s location right off the intersection of interstates 86 and 15 provides convenient travel throughout the valley. Pocatello Regional Transit buses also service the city and stop in the neighborhood. Delta flights in and out of Salt Lake City are available daily at the Pocatello Regional Airport. Residents don’t have to travel far for health care, as Portneuf Medical Center is around 4 miles away from most homes.
