Collier City
Mid-century homes with style and flair
Most of the residences in Coller City were constructed just past the mid-20th century, primarily in the 1950s and 1960s. Traditional ranch homes and some small bungalows are among the most popular designs in the neighborhood, though larger estates, Spanish revival designs with tiled roofs and Mediterranean features can also be found here. “There’s a lot of ranch-style homes that are mixed in with multi-family properties,” Barrett says. “It’s some of the most affordable real estate right now in Brown County.” There is no homeowner’s association, so residents are able to redesign or renovate. Prices typically fall between $250,000 and $400,000, and large lots are also sometimes sold. Man-made lakes surrounded by residential living, as well as gardens on the properties, add flair to the landscape.Educational institutions in and around Collier City
Charles Drew Elementary School is the only one of the three-school pipeline located within Collier City’s boundaries, sitting just north of center near the McNair Recreation Center. It receives a C from Niche, while students from sixth through eighth grade attend Crystal Lake Middle School. Crystal Lake scores a C-plus with Niche, while enrollment concludes its education at Blanche Ely High School just to the south. Scoring a C-plus on Niche as well, the service also rates Blanche Ely in the top 20% of high schools for student-athletes in the state of Florida.Uniquely-hued athletic facilities and golf greens
The McNair Recreation Center is the activity hub of the community. Located in Ronald E. McNair Park, attendees can exercise at the gym, clamber onto the playground or just take a walk around the ocean-blue track. If sports are on the docket for the day, its trademark blue football field and basketball courts are perfect for a pickup game or two. Golfers can hit the links at the Palm Aire Country Club, just across West Atlantic Boulevard to the south. The beach is just about 15 minutes in the eastern direction, meaning residents are less than half an hour from hitting the sand and enjoying the waves.
Regional and national chains for dining
The casual environment of Glasskey Restaurant and Take-Out is located right in the center and heart of Collier City, making for a friendly stop for bites to eat. Regional chain Gyroville has a location a few minutes down the road, while chains like Taco Bell and Popeyes are located on the south side of the neighborhood and McDonald’s is near the northern boundary. “Topgolf is right there at the Pomp, too,” Barrett, who’s been active in South Florida real estate for more than 15 years, says. “There’s lots of parks in Pompano and it’s a city that’s on the water, so the beach is always fun – it’s a beach town environment with the Pompano Beach Pier.”Celebrate the arts, food and more at recurring festivals
A number of area festivals are favorites for locals, including Old Town Untapped, a monthly celebration of the artistic scene outside the Bailey Contemporary Arts Center. Food trucks and art vendors abound in a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sounds of local bands’ music and the sights of craft beer pouring into glasses. Cooks can engage in friendly competition at the Collier City BBQ Throwdown, too, which spotlights the best St. Louis-style barbecue the area has to offer and took the area by storm. Also featuring live music and good vibes, the contest only recently began but has become a beloved area showcase.
Four crucial roadways on all sides of Collier City
Major thoroughfares make up each boundary of the Collier City layout. Florida’s Turnpike comprises the western edge, in its entirety starting in Miami and running for around 300 miles northward, while Hammondville Road runs along the northern boundary and South Powerline Road to the east. West Atlantic Boulevard carves its way along the southern border, completing the roadway quartet and connecting to the Turnpike, Interstate 95 and Route 1. “There’s lots of development there,” Barrett says. “Traditionally, it’s a relaxed, lower-income area that was isolated over the years but now, based on location, it looks like it’s going to make a very strong comeback in the near future.”
