A boater's community on the canals of Pompano Beach

Snug Harbor is a gateway to canalside living in Pompano Beach. Alongside its growing city, less than 10 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, the neighborhood has gotten significant attention from developers in recent years. New townhouses have sprung up on its waterfront, and many renovated midcentury houses hold steady at around $1 million. Despite new neighborhood developments — and the nearby growth of Downtown Pompano’s arts scene — the neighborhood maintains old-school Florida charm. It remains a small boater’s community at its heart.

Midcentury ranches and new-construction townhouses

Waterfront homes are always in demand in sunny South Florida, but “the prices [in Snug Harbor] are kept down a hair by the single fixed bridge between the neighborhood and the Intracoastal Waterway,” says Christine Balistreri Van Buskirk, a local Realtor with Balistreri Real Estate who has more than 17 years of experience. While it’s totally possible — and popular — to ride from the closest canal to the Intracoastal Waterway to the blue water, Federal Highway’s fixed bridge limits the size of boat one can use. Condos needing some TLC start at around $150,000. Move-in-ready waterfront units price out in the high $400,000s. Inland new-construction townhouses range from $430,000 to $600,000. Waterfront townhouses fall between $700,000 and just over $1 million. As for single-family homes, Snug Harbor has a variety of midcentury ranch-style houses. "More homes here are remodeled than not, so you'll see price differences depending on that,” Van Buskirk says. Houses on the canals range from $950,000 to almost $2 million. Landlocked ranches range from the high $600,000s to the mid $900,000s.

A bike ride from Pompano Beach Park

The neighborhood is just a mile down Atlantic Boulevard from Pompano Beach’s sandy oceanfront. Pompano Beach Park welcomes beachgoers to the shore with a small children’s water playground and the Great Lawn, a grassy spot where community yoga classes and music events are held. On the sand, folks soak up the sun and enjoy the Atlantic Ocean vista. Even closer to the neighborhood, McNab Park has a basketball and tennis court, and Kester Park offers a playground and two ballfields.

The budding Old Town arts and entertainment district

Locals in Snug Harbor can easily venture to Pompano Beach’s Old Town arts and entertainment district. The budding hub features a set of venues and art-focused spaces, bringing local culture to the forefront of the historic area. Stops for events nearby include the Bailey Contemporary Arts Center. This hotel-turned-studio space hosts Old Town Untapped, a monthly block party. Residents can also catch live acts and shows at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater, an outdoor space attracting local and international talent. “It’s a great time to move to Pompano Beach. There's a lot of opportunity, a lot of stuff happening, and they're putting a lot of money into these new developments,” Van Buskirk says.
