Crane Lakes is where golf-loving retirees go to live out their golden years. This active, enclosed community is home to active seniors who spend sunny Florida days swimming in the pool, playing tennis and bocce ball and relaxing on the sun deck. Golf is integral here, and residents take advantage of the 18-hole, semi-private course that curls through the neighborhood. Locals meet at the community clubhouse for fitness classes and nighttime games of Texas Hold ‘Em. It’s low-key, with none of the pomp and circumstance of better-known retirement communities like the Villages, but people like it that way. “People don't move here for just one thing,” says Michael DeWeil, resident and president of the Crane Lakes Homeowners Association. “It’s more about a well-rounded look at everything the community offers, including monthly events for the residents.”

Natural beauty
Crane Lakes offers its residents plenty of ways to stay active. The community has two pools, including one lap pool. It also has a heated whirlpool, clay tennis courts, bocce courts, a picnic area and an exercise room. Locals play pool in the billiards parlor, paint at the arts and crafts center, play shuffleboard and throw horseshoes in the horseshoe pit. There’s also a library for bookish neighbors and a fishing pier where people can spend leisurely afternoons. The Crane Lakes homeowner’s association plans community trips to theme parks and the theater. Beaches like Wilbur and Daytona Beach are 20 minutes away by car.

Restaurant and nearby retail
Inside the community is the Roost at Crane Lakes, a casual restaurant serving lunch, dinner and drinks. The menu is classic American fare like burgers, steak and seafood, and neighbors can also commission the restaurant to cater events. But Crane Lakes is also less than 5 minutes away from a collection of shops and restaurants, including chain Texas Roadhouse and Don Giovanni Contemporary Italian, a popular spot for gourmet pizza. Locals can do their grocery shopping at Publix, buy household essentials at Target, get a concrete mixer at Culver’s and go to the movies at Regal Pavilion, all five minutes outside the Crane Lakes gates. The Pavilion at Port Orange mall features some of the biggest names in retail.

Well-made mobile homes
The community has 802 residences made by manufactured homes maker Palm Harbor Homes. Its mobile homes were built throughout the 2000s, and since this is coastal Florida, they’ve been updated with new roofs. These one-story houses usually take up about 1,100 square feet with attached lanais. In the community, mobile homes sit next to each other on small lots with driveways and sidewalks out front. The closeness of the homes to one another creates a sense of community between neighbors. Some houses cost $169,000, and some go up to $235,000. Residents are a mixture of year-round residents and seasonal snowbirds.
