Leisure time in Hamlet can be spent seafaring from the inland waterways or the Atlantic shores of Daytona Beach. “Some people go to Daytona Beach, but others like the quiet of Wilbur Beach, which is here in Port Orange," says Lancelot Lenard, a broker associate with Florida Homes Realty & Mortgage and longtime resident of Port Orange. "A little further south, we have Ponce Inlet, which has a lighthouse, a boat launch and a Marine Science Center.” Even resident pups have a place to play at Seemor Memorial Dog Park, part of the Spruce Creek Recreational Center. The park has separate fenced areas for larger and smaller dogs, allowing for off-leash play while owners relax on shaded benches. Many residents also walk their dogs along the winding trail to a well-equipped sports complex. Local youth athletes practice and compete on the baseball fields, and neighbors meet for matches on Spruce Creek Park's six tennis courts. The star attraction for playdates is a themed playground known as Pirate Ship Park by locals. Hamlet is also just 5 miles from Crane Lakes Golf & Country Club, an 18-hole semi-private course.A-grade Spruce Creek High
Public schools serving Hamlet are within the Volusia County Schools District, which earns a B grade from Niche. "Many people move to Hamlet because of the school system," Forrester says. Spruce Creek Elementary has won the Five Star Award annually since the late 1990s, highlighting the school's commitment to volunteer work. Rated B-plus, the elementary school offers opportunities for students to participate in the school's news broadcast, safety patrol and STEM-centered organizations. Creekside Middle School also has a B-plus rating and provides many extracurricular activities, including robotics, fishing and golf. Older students attend Spruce Creek High School, receiving a solid A from Niche. Spruce Creek is known for its award-winning theater program and championship sports teams in football, weightlifting and baseball.Popular Dunlawton Christmas parade
In December, Dunlawton Avenue comes to life as locals enjoy the annual Port Orange Holiday Parade, a much-anticipated tradition for over 40 years. “The parade is where a bunch of businesses come out in floats. It’s like the Macy’s Day Parade, but clearly not as big. There’s dancing, gymnastics, and high school bands that come out to play,” Lenard says. Christ The King Community Church Port Orange on Spruce Creek Road regularly does Sunday services with live music among twinkle-light-wrapped trees.Nearby Votran stops
Hamlet is 3 miles from Interstate 95, which leads south to the Everglades or north to Daytona Beach International Airport, about 10 miles away. Public transit is available at Votran bus stops along Taylor Road and Spruce Creek Road. AdventHealth Port Orange ER is 5 miles northwest and is appreciated for its Expedited Emergency Assessments.Dunlawton Avenue shopping and dining

Restaurants, stores and businesses line a 7-mile stretch of Dunlawton Avenue from the western part of the city to the Daytona Beach shorefront. A few miles west, The Pavilion at Port Orange and Westport Plaza have Publix, numerous big-box stores, a Hollywood Theater and various restaurants. Malibu Beach Grill's outdoor patio provides views of breezy palm trees where locals sip cocktails and eat seafood. The Pavilion Farmer's Market sets up booths on Saturdays, where locals can choose from fresh oranges, greens and artisan goods. Nearby are Walmart, Target, Lowe's and HomeGoods. Neighbors Ice Cream Parlor on Spruce Creek Road blends with the surrounding houses, offering homemade sweet treats since 2008.
