Breezy Rose Bay living
Harbor Oaks thrives on its water recreation. Whether situated on the water's edge or further inland, Harbor Oaks homeowners aren’t far from the cool breeze across Rose Bay. The streets fill with modest, colorful homes that have seen generations grow, with many lovingly updated over the years. "This is an older part of Port Orange, with construction primarily being throughout the 1950s and 1960s," says Walter Borgen, a broker with Re/Max Signature and alumni of Spruce Creek High School who has been selling houses for over 20 years. Just 4 miles south of downtown Port Orange, weekends are spent boating and fishing or grabbing drinks with loved ones at long-standing family-owned restaurants.
Coastal homes overlooking Rose Bay
Small homes painted in coastal hues line the narrow, palm tree-shaded streets of Harbor Oaks. "Originally, houses were built without air-conditioning, but over time, people have torn older properties down and added updates. The neighborhood is formed of bungalows ranging from 1,300 to 1,500 square feet," Borgen says. There are no sidewalks in Harbor Oaks, but the neighborhood's park-line ambiance makes morning strolls cool. Small boats are found parked in front of single-car garages with paved driveways. Spanish Revival and ranch-style waterfront properties offer spacious backyards with long wooden piers that stretch into Rose Bay. "The city tries to build communities outside of the 100-year flood plain. Most people don't have to worry about flooding regularly, but of course, when there's storm surges, it can be a problem." The neighborhood also has a canal system that aids drainage. Houses with private piers fetch between $400,000 and $1 million, while inland homes can be priced anywhere from $250,000 to $350,000.

Boating and fishing along Rose Bay
Residents rent fishing skiffs, paddle boats and canoes at Rose Bay Watersports for fun on the water. But exploring the waterways continues beyond the bay. "The Disappearing Island near Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach. When the tide goes out, it becomes an island, and people go down to the inlet for boat parties," Borgen says. Recreation options include zooming around at Go-Kart City, known for having one of the most extensive tracks in the area with a complete quarter-mile loop. Inlet Golf Range on South Nova Road offers golf clinics with PGA athletes on weekends to practice before becoming a member of a nearby golf club. "Most people are a part of Spruce Creek Country Club, and yacht clubs are popular here too," Borgen says.

Within Harbor Oaks, the neon-aqua Hidden Treasure Tiki Bar and Grill sits on the water at Rose Bay Watersports, serving a menu of seafood starters and flavorful gumbo. Locals meet up after work at First Turn Port Orange, which opened its doors on South Ridgewood Avenue in the late 1980s and self-proclaims itself as the largest bar in Daytona. "These restaurants are famous local spots and are always having live music on weekends," says Lancelot Lenard, a broker associate with Florida Homes Realty & Mortgage and resident of Port Orange. On that same street, Nonne's Italian Restaurant & Sports Bar is a family-owned haunt with big portions and service warmer than the weather outside. Convenient access to U.S. 1 right in the neighborhood
Harbor Oaks is easily connected to Daytona, New Smyrna and the rest of the country. "U.S. 1 goes straight through Harbor Oaks and goes all the way to Maine. The Votran bus system loops through there," Borgen says. "There is a good bus system that can be slow at times but is helpful for people to get to doctors' appointments or the mall," he adds. Bayshore Animal Hospital Port Orange is right in the neighborhood, and the Halifax Health Emergency Department of Port Orange is 5 miles north.
