Homes with acreage and Colvos Passage views
Olalla has less than 150 houses, and homes are typically passed down through generations. According to Marcie Martin, a managing broker with the Martin Real Estate Group who has over 25 years of experience in Port Orchard, these homes sit on between one acre and 5 acres of rolling hills and woods, which is more space than in more developed Port Orchard communities nearby. Ranch-style homes built in the 1960s list between $640,000 when further inland and $820,000 when up against the shore. Early 2000s Cape Cods, standing on over 5 acres, start at $960,000 and go up to $1.6 million when overlooking the water. Since Olalla is built on a hillside, homes are elevated above the shore, protecting them from flooding around the Colvos Passage, Olalla Creek and Olalla Bay.Activities from Anderson Point to Olalla Community Club
Since 1906, the Olalla Community Club has been a space for gatherings such as potlucks and music nights. Membership fees vary by membership type, ranging from $35 to $100 and cover the cost of upkeep for the barn-shaped hall and funding for activities. Olalla Community Club gathers volunteers and plans local events, including the New Year’s Day polar plunge and the Olalla Americana Music Festival. When looking for a place to walk or look out at the water, Anderson Point Park’s beach is almost a mile downhill from parking spots, resulting in a quick hike to the main attractions, the Colvos Passage and Vashon Island views. Banner Forest Heritage Park’s 635-acre park, 5 miles north of Olalla, has over 29 miles of hiking and biking trails.Taking classes and theatre in South Kitsap
Part of the South Kitsap School District, Olalla Elementary School maintains a B-plus grade from Niche, and John Sedgwick Middle School earns a B. Niche gives South Kitsap High School a B-minus. Students in the high school’s award-winning theatre program have been recognized at local thespian festivals.Olalla Americana Music Festival and berry pies
Since 1991, when the Olalla Americana Music Festival (OAMF) was still called the “Olalla Bluegrass Festival,” the community has gathered to celebrate musical talents. Held in August, the event showcases nine regional and national artists, food trucks and local artisans selling crafts. Bakers have competed in the festival’s berry pie baking contest for roughly 30 years, using their best recipes to take home bragging rights and a prize announced on the day of the competition.Routes using Banner and Olalla Valley roads
Banner Road Southeast is the north-running thoroughfare that connects to recreation in Banner Forest Heritage Park and Seattle-bound ferries at Southworth’s port. Olalla Valley Road Southeast curves down the neighborhood’s western edge and cuts east toward the coast, connecting the community with gathering spaces, including the Olalla Community Club, Olalla Vineyard & Winery and Olalla Bay Market & Landing.Olalla Bay Market shopping, sourdough pizzas and wines
Olalla Bay Market and Landing is a gift shop, grocery store and restaurant regarded highly for its sourdough pizza. The store pays homage to previous tenants with photos of the building over the years. Memorabilia from around the area also decorates the market walls, sharing stories from the community’s time as a port of commerce and its ties to true crime in the early 1900s. “There’s a boat launch at Olalla Bay Market, and the restaurant has become so popular that people are jamming up the boat ramp,” Martin says. To the east, Olalla Vineyard & Winery utilizes the area’s rich soils to grow grapes for their wines, pairing them with smoked cheeses and crackers. When stocking up on groceries or searching for home décor, Albertsons and Target are an 8-mile drive away in Gig Harbor.
