Secluded single-family homes throughout Sixes
Sixes has a small collection of single-family homes spread throughout heavily forested streets. Curvy, unmarked roads wind throughout the community, past groves of fir trees. The roads connect to the paved two-way U.S. Route 101, also known as the Oregon Coast Highway. Late 20th-century manufactured homes with metal siding sit on multi-acre lots shaded by towering ponderosa pine trees. These properties have enough room for RV parking and large sheds, and they typically cost around $200,000. Larger wooden ranch-style homes built in the late 20th century have up to 20 acres of land -- enough room to raise horses and goats. Prices range from $350,000 to $550,000.Fishing for salmon in the Sixes River
Recreational fishing, hiking and proximity to dark sand beaches are major draws to the neighborhood. Catching fish in the 30-mile-long Sixes River is a popular way to relax. Seven miles east, the clear blue Edson Creek features a boat launch and grassy, tree-covered campsites, fire rings and cement picnic tables. The multi-acre Cape Blanco State Park touches the area’s western border and has views of the shoreline and green bluffs. The park includes more than 8 miles of trails leading to the beach, a horse camp with pipe corrals and the 19th-century red and white Cape Blanco Lighthouse.Getting involved in student clubs at Pacific High
Sixes is zoned for the Port Orford-Langlois School District. Kids start at Driftwood Elementary, a kindergarten through eighth-grade school that scored a C from Niche. Pacific High is rated a B-minus and features several student organizations like chess club and Future Business Leaders of America.Heading north for Circles in the Sand on Oregon’s coast
Since 2014, locals have ventured 27 miles north to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort for the annual Fall Match Play event. The four-day event starts with participants meeting at a 100,000-square-foot putting course. They play 9-hole matches on four hilly courses over the next few days. From April to August, people gather 21 miles north of Sixes at Face Rock Viewpoint to celebrate Circles in the Sand. Circles Team Members and artists take advantage of low tide and create massive, intricate sand labyrinths for visitors to walk through.Traveling to and from Sixes
U.S. Route 101 runs through the area, linking Sixes to Port Orford’s city center 5 miles south. The neighborhood is car-dependent, and traffic is light, except during summer tourist season. Southern Coos Hospital in Bandon, Oregon, is 22 miles south, and Southwest Oregon Regional Airport is a 50-mile drive north. The airport offers direct flights to San Francisco and Denver.Monthly flea markets at the Sixes Grange and more shopping down south
Most shopping happens outside the neighborhood, but the Sixes Grange is a go-to spot for homemade jelly, quilts and other knick-knacks at the monthly flea markets. Folks can drive 6 miles south to grocery shop at the regional chain Ray’s Food Place. Another grocery option is the Port Orford Community Co-op, where local farmers sell fresh fruits and vegetables. Co-op visitors can sit at picnic tables to watch permaculture gardening demonstrations. The locally owned Nicki’s Knick-Knacks sells camping-themed beanies and a variety of candles, and Sixes residents can find home tools and building supplies at Gold Beach Lumber close by. The upscale restaurant, Redfish, serves French-inspired seafood plates with views of bluffs in the distance, and the turquoise waters of the Pacific. Folks can hang out at Mr. Ed’s Espresso, Juice and Underground Pub for live music and homemade shepherd’s pie.Rainy days can lead to flooding in Sixes
During winter months, Sixes can get 70 to 90 inches of rain, meaning some areas of the may be at risk of flooding during rainfall. Curry County recommends homeowners keep a 72-hour kit filled with first aid supplies and get to higher ground in the event of major flooding. The Oregon Health Authority also recommends that homeowners hire an electrician to raise electric components like circuit breakers and sockets at least 12 inches above their home’s projected flood elevation.
