Home values in proximity to the city's growth centers

Palm Trails, inconspicuously tucked into the center of Port St. Lucie, offers an attractive residential setting with surprising affordability for a growing South Florida location. Michelle Scherger, a Realtor with Pinnacle Real Estate Group and Port St. Lucie resident, says homes in the city are much more affordable than those on other popular coastal areas, such as Jupiter. “You live in Port St. Lucie so you’re not married to your mortgage,” she says. Residential savings can always be put toward taking advantage of the vast retail and dining options in the growth centers of Tradition and St. Lucie West, both of which are just minutes from the neighborhood.

Nieghborhood's residential expansion continues

Palm Trails has been expanding since the early 2000s, so ranch-style homes built primarily in the 1980s now mingle with a collection of contemporary homes in subdivision-style settings. Pools dot many of the large backyards. Available land doesn’t stay that way for long, as new construction has been consistent in recent years. Prices range from the mid-$300,000s to the high $600,000s for the neighborhood’s largest custom homes. The city is essentially a demarcation line for housing costs along the Atlantic Coast, which tend to increase the further south one goes. “Prices in general in Port St. Lucie are lower than they are even 5, 10, 15 miles south,” says Kurt Rohl, president of Rohl Properties and resident of the nearby Canal Pointe neighborhood. “That’s the reason we moved to Port St. Lucie, because of the home values.” Those values will only increase for homebuyers as more residents relocate to the city and take advantage of the relative affordability. “We have a lot of people from Fort Lauderdale and Miami who are coming up here,” adds Rohl. Given its location on the Atlantic Coast, homebuyers should be aware that severe weather is part of living in Port St. Lucie. A portion of the neighborhood is located along the C-24 Canal, which means residents can face a heightened risk of flooding, especially in the aftermath of a hurricane.

K-8 school located in the neighborhood

Oak Hammock K-8 School, rated B-minus by Niche, is centrally located in the neighborhood. An on-site holocaust museum started by a teacher more than a decade ago anchors the school’s history and culture curricula. Nearby St. Lucie West Centennial High, a B-rated school, offers academy programs in subjects as varied as outboard marine service and multimedia technology. Niche gives both schools an A for diversity.

Variety of parks and minor-league baseball stadium nearby

Apache Park is a small community green space where a pond offers relaxing bankside fishing. Residents can stay active at parks in neighboring communities. McChesney Park also offers fishing and amenities that include a soccer field and space for canine companions. Turtle Run Park features ballfields and children’s playscapes. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the amenities at nearby Oak Hammock Park, where visitors can fish from the piers or launch into the C-24 Canal that connects directly to the St. Lucie River. Baseball fans can catch the minor-league St. Lucie Mets at Clover Park in neighboring St. Lucie West. Residents will find more waterfront adventures on Jensen Beach, located less than 15 miles away on the Atlantic coast.

Eclectic dining options in St. Lucie West; plenty of grocery options

Winn-Dixie, Bravo’s Supermarkets, Aldi and Walmart Neighborhood Market provide nearby grocery options. Del Rio Authentic Mexican Restaurant is a highly rated neighborhood dining destination, and Rick’s Diner is a popular local establishment just outside the community along SW Port St. Lucie Boulevard. To the north is a concentration of retail stores and restaurants in St. Lucie West. Walmart anchors the Town Center, and Publix and Home Depot can be found nearby. Featured dining and entertainment stops range from Berry Fresh Café, a local farm-to-table eatery, to The Vine & Barley, a contemporary beer hall. “St. Lucie West is still developing, which blows my mind because I didn’t think it could get any bigger,” Scherger says. Residents also have access to a similar variety of options in the nearby Tradition neighborhood, which features one of the city’s newest culinary hotspots, The Chicken Place. The Peruvian rotisserie restaurant and cocktail bar is the creation of regional restaurateur Kyle Green. “You ever see a guy who keeps trying new things and they all fail? Well, Kyle G is not that guy,” Scherger says. “He’s got amazing food. In St. Lucie West, he has an oyster bar where the shrimp are as big as your head. There’s definitely a method to his madness.”

Conveniently nestled between I-95 and Florida Turnpike

The neighborhood sits between Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike, both of which provide easy access throughout the city and region. In addition, the Crosstown Parkway, which forms the neighborhood’s northern border, is a convenient alternative route. “When the city was making a career out of paving the roads around here, I was taking the Crosstown Parkway into Tradition the back way,” Scherger says. Residents can catch the bus along SW Port St. Lucie Boulevard. Treasure Coast International Airport nearby is a general aviation facility. Palm Beach International, located 50 miles south, is the closest commercial airport. A Brightline commuter rail station is coming to nearby Downtown Stuart, but it is not scheduled to be operational until 2028.

Not far from there along the St. Lucie River is the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, which hosts jazz nights, a Horticulture How-To Series and yoga and tai chi in the gardens. On the second Thursday of every month from October through April, Port St. Lucie Parks & Recreation hosts River Nights, a night of free live music, at Veterans Park along the riverfront.
