Township circumventing Jersey Shore in Lycoming County
Most of Lycoming County's Porter Township consists of rolling meadows, farms dotted with red barns and views of the Appalachian Mountains in the near distance. Although very rural, Porter nearly surrounds the Jersey Shore Township, a nearby touchpoint for activity and business. "Porter is just an outlying area of Jersey Shore. It's not considered a borough because it's more rural to a degree, but it is being built up. Some people are building new homes there," says Sherry Pittenger, secretary/treasurer of the neighboring Nippenose Township and Lycoming County resident for over 60 years. "Any area you'd choose to be around here is a great place to live."
Isolated development among farmland
Fields of corn, soybeans, and other crops cover most of Porter's land. Many homes in Porter are along country roads and range in style from Victorians built in the late 1800s to newly constructed contemporary properties. Some are within view of other houses, while others are more isolated. A few properties just on the edge of Jersey Shore in Porter are in subdivisions with lots sized about half an acre. These include ranches built in the second half of the 20th century and two-story contemporary homes built between the 1990s and today. Smaller homes and cottages tend to cost between $150,000 and $200,000, while larger properties can range from around $250,000 to $600,000.
Newer subdivisions can be seen popping up on land formerly devoted to farms in Porter.
A visitor to Porter will see many streets lined with smaller ranch homes.

Pine Creek Rail Trail goes through Porter
The Pine Creek Rail Trail spans 62 miles, following Pine Creek and wandering north from Lycoming County to Tioga County. This path made of pounded-down stone reaches natural wonders like the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon 50 miles north. Outdoor enthusiasts come for views of the densely forested, 1,500-foot-deep gorge punctuated with waterfalls. Visitors can also drop their boat in and float down Pine Creek from Phelps' Mills Canoe Access, just on the edge of Porter. Nearby in Jersey Shore, locals can catch a Little League baseball game, swim at the pool or play a pickup game on the basketball courts at the Jersey Shore Borough Recreation Area.
The Pine Creek Rail Trail is the ideal place for both hikers and bikers to tour Jersey Shore.

Jersey Shore Area School District is a "melting pot" of townships
Children from several townships in Lycoming County, including Porter, attend nearby Jersey Shore Area schools. "The middle and high school are like a melting pot of all the outlying [elementary] schools," Pittenger says. Kids start at Jersey Shore Area Elementary School and Jersey Shore Area Middle School, both graded B from Niche. Older students attend B-minus-rated Jersey Shore Area Senior High School, which Pittenger says prides itself on its varsity football team, the Jersey Shore Bulldogs. The football team plays at the Jersey Shore Area Football Field on McCanna Drive.
Bald Birds Brewing Company and more in Jersey Shore
Locals can shoot some pool or sit on the deck with their dogs while enjoying a beer flight at Bald Birds Brewing Company, one of the few businesses in Porter. The township is also home to Hope River Church of God and Lifetree Ministries church. And because residents are just next to Jersey Shore township, they have access to a Weis Markets and Lingle's Neighborhood Market, as well as Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital and several restaurants. There are chain spots like Subway and Arby's and local eateries such as Gateway Cafe and Kutzas Kitchen. Kutzas Kitchen operates in an unassuming tan building, but its hoagies and salads are popular picks.

Jersey Shore and Nippenose Townships throw annual festivals
Bald Birds Brewing Company hosts Wednesday night trivia, craft fairs and seasonal events like "Oktobird Fest" with live music and drink deals in this otherwise sleepy township. Neighboring townships of Jersey Shore and Nippenose have annual festivals that draw in crowds from all over the county as well. Jersey Shore's biggest event is the Jersey Shore Town Meeting, spanning nearly a week leading up to July 4th. The festivities include a parade, carnival rides and games, with the celebration ending with fireworks on the night of July 4th. Nearby Nippenose Township's Antes Fort Historical Days is a three-day event in September that attracts thousands of people. "It started out small. They would bring in steam engines, horses and it just started to grow," Pittenger says. "Now each year it's something different." Activities include pony rides and a greased pig chase for kids, historical reenactments, a reptile show and tractor pulls.
Care at Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital and driving to Williamsport
Porter is car dependent. Pittenger says that people in the area often commute a mile to Jersey Shore, 12 miles to Lock Haven or 17 miles to Williamsport. Drivers get to Williamsport on Route 220. Jersey Shore Airport in Nippenose does not service commercial flights; Williamsport Regional Airport, 22 miles east, services commercial flights to Dulles International Airport. Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital is also about a mile away. "It's a nice little hospital," Pittenger says. "It's considered a trauma center, and they've upgraded so accident victims can get flights out to a larger hospital." The hospital installed a helipad in 2021 to help expedite travel times for airlifted patients.
