Walking trails on an old train line
Homebuyers wanting easy access to athletic and outdoor outlets will love Riverdale's many walking trails and parks. The Air Line State Park Trail stretches 50 miles of Connecticut land. Once a train line from the late 1800s, it is now a draw for bikers, walkers, skaters and even horseback riders. Portland Recreational Complex is next door and has baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a playground and a splash pad for children to enjoy. Also home to baseball diamonds and adult softball leagues, Bransfield Park's walking trails are popular for cross-country skiing once the inevitable snow comes in the winter. Those lucky enough to snag a house on one of the two ponds in the neighborhood can enjoy swimming and boating in their backyards.Houses of every style shaded by mature trees
It's sometimes hard to see Riverdale's vast array of housing styles as they're set back on long driveways and surrounded by towering tree canopies. Rolling hills and plenty of farms with fences keeping in horses add to the secluded nature of the small Connecticut town. Ranging, on average, anywhere from $250,000 to $750,000, bilevels, split-levels and ranches are common in the area that underwent housing growth in the 1960s. Colonial Revivals with many bedrooms and modern farmhouses also line the streets that branch off from one another and usually end in cul-de-sacs. Offering even more privacy than the already concealed streets of Riverdale are the limited properties alongside Jobs Pond and Great Hill Pond.
Mimosas at brunch or sangria at the winery
From a 10-minute drive either east or west, residents can find national grocery stores, pharmacies and familiar retail shopping. In town, however, are some highly-rated restaurants and locally-owned businesses. Arrigoni Winery & Cider Co. takes advantage of the rolling hills of Connecticut for its grape vines that contribute to over 20 different types of wine. On the weekends, locals can head to the family-owned vineyard for wine tastings, live music and delicious appetizers. Eggs Up Restaurant is a few doors down the same road and is always busy with brunch lovers and those looking for a caffeine kick in the morning. Eggs Benedict, waffles, home fries and generous portions of other breakfast staples are a filling way to start the day.
A historic sight is now an adventure park
"The famous Brownstone houses in New York City have original stone from the Brownstone Quarry in Portland," Finer says. "The quarry since flooded and was turned into an adventure park." With a day pass at Brownstone Adventure Sports Park, residents can zip line, cliff jump, wakeboard, rock climb and participate in other water-based activities in the flooded quarry. Riverdale golfers have plenty of greenways with three golf courses to choose from. According to Finer, "Quarry Ridge Golf Course has a nice restaurant and some challenging holes on sharp angles. Your ball will veer off into the woods if you don't hit it right."Smaller classes mean more attention per student
Served by Portland Public Schools, Riverdale students can expect to attend five separate schools before graduating. Valley View is rated a B-minus by Niche and is where students begin their education. Gildersleeve and Portland Middle School receive a B, and Brownstone Intermediate and Portland High School receive a B-plus. "It has a smaller school district than many surrounding towns," Finer notes. "However, with fewer kids in each class, they get more attention."
A short drive across the river to Middletown
Riverdale has no transit, but a few bus lines run through downtown Portland. Commuters in Riverdale are car-dependent for getting to work and can travel 20 miles to Hartford or 40 miles to New Haven. Bradley International Airport is an hour away, and Middlesex Hospital is just across the Arrigoni Bridge in Middletown.
