Strong arts and culinary scene in Portland enclave
Situated less than a mile from Downtown and bordering the Back Cove, East Bayside is a quintessential Portland neighborhood with a scene revolving around arts, food and community. “It’s a very convenient location, and it’s full of art galleries, restaurants, breweries and coffee shops,” says Elise Loschiavo, a local broker with Vitalius Real Estate Group. The East Bayside Neighborhood Organization (EBNO) is a community-focused group with a website that keeps track of and updates residents on any developments or projects happening in the neighborhood. Prior to the 21st century, this area was more of an industrial sector, but as brewery businesses realized the lucrative location and utilization of warehouses as breweries, what emerged was a district of craft beer, kombucha and spirits – plus nondrinking businesses such as cafes, bookstores, restaurants and a plethora of arts organizations and galleries. “There’s a lot going on East Bayside,” Loschiavo says. “It’s a very creative, vibrant area.”

Home to Coffee by Design headquarters
A vibrant culinary scene blankets East Bayside, making it a popular local destination for restaurants, bars and cafes. According to Loschiavo, the headquarters for the Portland-based Coffee By Design café are located within the neighborhood. “Rising Tide Brewery is also very popular,” Loschiavo adds, referring to the artisanal brewery that sits across the street from Coffee By Design, where residents can find live music and food vendors in an indoor/outdoor setting. Diners can also head to Terlingua Restaurant & Market to enjoy some barbecue or indulge in milkshakes and Belgian frites at Duckfat. For fresh oysters near the water, residents can head to nearby Eventide Oyster Company, situated adjacent to Old Port. “There’s also a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s in the area, which people can walk to,” Loschiavo adds.

Visit local art galleries and museums
The popular community center, Mayo Street Arts, serves as an affordable artist studio rental and rehearsal space and is also an art gallery, theater, concert venue and meeting space. All art forms are welcome, but Mayo Street’s specialties are folk music, puppetry and dance. Just down the road is the Maine Jewish Museum, a museum honoring Maine’s Jewish history housed in an old synagogue. East Bayside is also home to Cove Street Arts, another gallery, studio and event space that hosts a range of artwork exhibits, presentations and workshops.

Classic New England homes line hilly roads
A vast majority of those living in East Bayside are renters, although driving down the street, locals will notice hilly roads lined with New Englander-style traditional single-family homes, many of which feature clapboard siding, colorful exteriors and brick foundations. Residents may also come across an occasional bay window or a series of eclectic architectural finishings. “There’s definitely a mix of apartment buildings and multifamily housing,” Loschiavo says, adding that the neighborhood itself is older and some properties could be considered historic. Condo units here can range between $400,000 and $750,000, although a handful do exceed $800,000; single-family and multifamily housing often starts around $500,000 and can rise up to around $1 million.

Fruit trees at Boyd Street Community Garden
“East Bayside is adjacent to what we call Back Cove Trail, where you can walk along the waterfront for quite a ways,” Loschiavo says. The Back Cove Trail is a part of Back Cove Park, which also offers open green spaces along the bay and touts the 3.5-mile trail as a pedestrian path that also accommodates bikers. Farther inland, sports enthusiasts can head to Kennedy Park to play a game of soccer, basketball or tennis on one of the park’s several outdoor athletic facilities. Kennedy Park also features a wraparound walking path and a children’s playground. Just down the street from the park is the Boyd Street Community Garden, which was built in 2009 as part of a partnership with Cultivating Community. At the garden, locals can walk through rows of fruit trees and berry bushes or check out a youth garden maintained by high school students.

Walk less than a mile to Downtown Portland
Residents can walk less than a mile and cross Franklin Street to Downtown Portland and the Arts District; for commuters, Interstate 295 runs adjacent to the bay through the neighborhood and acts as a major area thoroughfare. Several bus lines operated by Greater Portland Metro, including Route 7 Falmouth and Metro Route 9B, have stops in East Bayside. To catch a flight, Portland International Jetport is a quick 4-mile drive away. Because of its proximity to the bay, there is some flooding risk in this area; however, the residential parts of this neighborhood are typically unaffected, and the Portland Department of Public Works has several measures in place to combat flooding.
