Big things in store for this residential Portland neighborhood
Considered the city’s easternmost neighborhood, East Deering sits right across Tukey’s Bridge from Portland’s peninsula. As the city’s population continues to grow, more and more people are moving to the residential areas on the outskirts of downtown — and East Deering is one of them. “It’s an up-and-coming area surrounding Back Cove, and it’s undergoing a major transformation,” says Emilie Levecque, a broker with Portside Real Estate Group. In 2021, it was announced that East Deering would become the new location of the Roux Institute, a graduate research campus for Northeastern University. The campus will include a new public waterfront along the coast and future plans for retail. Although the neighborhood is in for some big changes in the next few years, East Deering retains a slower-paced feel compared to the rest of Portland, separated from the peninsula by calm waters. “It’s close enough to downtown that you still get the city feel without all the traffic jams,” Levecque adds.

An array of 20th-century homes with new developments coming
Some homes in East Deering sit close together on central thoroughfares, perched above the road behind small patches of grass. Others are tucked out of the way along residential streets lined by mature trees and shrubbery. Foursquare homes and the occasional Victorian or Italianate date back to the early 20th century, though development has continued steadily through the 1900s and into the 2000s, resulting in a variety of styles ranging from quaint Cape Cods to stately Colonial Revivals to modern condo complexes. “There’s starting to be some new development in the area. You’ll see quite a few renovated properties for rent and for sale,” Levecque says. While a modest two-bedroom cottage can start at $300,000, prices can climb as high as $900,000 for a four-bedroom house on a half-acre lot.

City views across the Cove at Payson Park
Payson Park borders East Deering to the west, sprawling across 48 acres of green space along the banks of Back Cove. With tree-lined paths along the shore and views of Portland from across the water, walk-a-thons and races such as the Portland 10 Miler commonly start at Payson Park. Other athletes also flock to the park for its robust sporting facilities, whether that means cheering on youth ballgames at the diamond or playing a pickup game on the basketball court. There’s year-round fun in store for kids; the playground and splash pad are perfect for summertime, and families bring their sleds and hit the hills when it snows in winter. While the coastal park doesn’t offer direct waterfront access, seafaring residents can dock their boats at the Maine Yacht Center close by or head down to the Eastern Promenade across Tukey’s Bridge to stretch out on East End Beach.
East Deering is a delightful suburban neighborhood, located just across the water from Portland.

Neighborhood restaurants on Veranda Street
A handful of local restaurants cluster along Veranda Street, just north of Tukey’s Bridge. Veranda Thai Cuisine has become an area staple; the tiny restaurant might look unassuming to passersby, but inside, the walls are lined with plaques asserting it as one of Portland’s best spots for Thai fare. Just down the street, Other Side Diner is a relative newcomer onto the scene. A thoughtful take on the traditional diner experience, Other Side serves familiar homestyle breakfast meals sourced from local ingredients. The Grateful Cup is another popular morning stop for those who like to wake up with a smoothie bowl topped with fresh fruits and granola, served out of a bright purple café that’s impossible to miss. Home chefs can grab gourmet groceries along Washington Avenue at Monte’s Fine Foods or further north at Shaw’s, about a 10-minute drive away.
