Big-city amenities and a natural oasis combine in Parkside
Despite its location at the heart of modern-day Portland, Parkside was once a densely forested estate belonging to the Deerings. Around the 1850s, the family slowly transitioned their land into a residential enclave, reserving 55 acres for Deering Oaks Park. Today, the green space is a natural escape from the neighborhood’s bustling and burgeoning atmosphere. “Within the last decade or so, this has become a popular neighborhood because of the location,” says Sandy Johnson, the owner-broker of Town and Shore Real Estate and a Portland local. “People can walk to the restaurants on Congress Street or the downtown area. It's also next to the Portland International Jetport, the University of Southern Maine and the Portland Harbor. You’re near all the essential Portland places.”
The Sacred Heart Parish is centrally located in the Parkside neighborhood.

Parkside has turn-of-the-century properties for sale and rent
“It’s a rental-heavy area,” says Johnson. “However, there are some condos and single-family homes. Those are always desirable because they’re well-preserved houses from the turn of the century.” Homebuyers and renters will find Queen Annes, Italianate townhouses, Second Empire-style structures and towered Tudor dwellings. Drivers park on the streets as homes sit compactly behind the neighborhood’s brick sidewalks. Single-family properties and condos typically have three to four bedrooms. They also cost between $350,000 and $700,000, a range similar to a Portland home’s average $600,000 selling price.

Eclectic eateries along Congress Street
Parkside residents will find numerous restaurants along Congress Street. Coffee lovers can start their day with a freshly roasted cup of joe and a handmade cranberry scone from Tandem, a bakery and café housed in a 1960s gas station. Tucked in the basement of a brick building, Bramhall may be hard to spot, but the speakeasy’s extensive cocktail list and upscale American eats make the journey worth it. Hot Suppa is another neighborhood mainstay. The family owned establishment has served soul food staples like fried green tomatoes and grits since 2004. Parkside is also within walking distance from downtown Portland's restaurants, retailers and museums. Adding to the neighborhood's central location, A Save A Lot grocery store and the Maine Medical Center are both less than 1 mile away.

A rose garden and waterway at Deering Oaks
Deering Oaks in the neighborhood’s northern region provides locals ample outdoor activity. Visitors can cross the stone bridge as they walk around the pond. The waterway is a popular spot for figure skaters and hockey players when it freezes in the winter. Children can cool off in the ravine-style kiddie pool during the summer, and athletes can play on the tennis courts or baseball diamonds year-round. “Deering Oaks is where the Portland Farmers Market is every Saturday during the spring, and people in the area love walking to it,” says Johnson. Horticulturalists can stroll around the winding rose garden, which has over 38 varieties and 600 bushes.
People looking for indoor recreation can use the racquetball courts, fitness center and gymnasium at the YMCA on Forest Avenue. The William B. Troubh Ice Arena off Park Avenue has an NHL-sized rink, offering lessons for skaters of all ages. Baseball fans can even catch a minor league game at Hadlock Field, home of the Portland Sea Dogs.

Very rarely do we have issues with the weather. Even with extremes in seasonal temperatures, things are pretty even-keeled. The most essential items in my wardrobe would probably have to be my down parka, waterproof boots & winter hat.

It's a pretty cheap area for Portland, a little grimy, but not horrible. Rent keeps getting raised each year though.
