A quiet retreat from the mainland
Once known as the Coney Island of Maine and later an important World War II outpost, Peaks Island is now a peaceful neighborhood in the city of Portland. This 740-acre Island boasts a small-town feel with unparalleled ocean views and is accessible only by ferry, water taxi or personal boat. Cars are allowed, but people are encouraged to get around on foot or by bike. "I like the relaxed and loose part of the island," says Jill Keefe, designated broker at Port Island Realty on Peaks Island and an island resident. "I like seeing kids be able to ride their bikes around, and I like the safety."

Showcases New England style architecture
All of Peaks Island offers stunning vistas, but its biggest residential draw is the more private section known as the backshore, where majestic houses line the rocky waterfront and look out into the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the houses on the Island follow the traditional Nantucket model of gray shingle architecture, giving them that faded New England waterfront look. Other styles comprise cottages, Cape Cod and craftsman. Prices range from $355,000 to $1.9 million. Because most of the homes are situated close together, the yard space is small, about 1/8 acre, suitable for little gardens or gathering areas. Most of the tree-lined streets have sidewalks. Keefe particularly enjoys walking with neighbors. "There are a lot of dogs on the island and a lot of people to take walks with," she says.

Two public beaches and a museum
Residents can hike or skateboard at Trott Littlejohn Park. Most of the beaches on Peaks Island are private and linked to homeownership. But the Island does have two public beaches. They are Sandy Beach, which is accessible by a long wooden ramp and great for walking at low tide or kayaking to Catnip Island and Cairn Beach, a non-swimming beach that is perfect for viewing nearby lighthouses. For a cultural experience, residents can visit the Fifth Maine Museum to learn about Peaks Island's history.
