A residential enclave near the heart of the city
Less than two miles from downtown, Rosemont is a highly sought-after neighborhood for its easygoing, residential feel close to city attractions. Unlike most neighborhoods in the Portland area, Rosemont is comprised almost entirely of owner-occupied single-family homes, giving this community a more firmly rooted feel where neighbors can truly get to know one another. Creative residents come together in the Rosemont Artists Guild of Maine, supported by locals through an annual holiday show. “Portland has always been a place for artists, and it’s no different today,” says Amy Mulkerin, owner of Mulkerin Real Estate. “The city also draws a lot of outdoorsy types, and having the Capisic Pond and the Fore River Trail in Rosemont — that’s a big deal.” Add in some Victorian architecture, a well-regarded private school, and some local restaurants, and it’s no wonder people pick Rosemont to settle down in.

Coastal New England homes on quiet, tree-lined streets
Comprised of flat streets lined by trees and sidewalks, Rosemont is almost entirely residential. As opposed to many neighborhoods in and around Portland, most people who live here own their homes and take pride in their well-maintained houses, many of which were built between the 1910s and the ‘50s. “All the homes in Rosemont are unique. It’s where you’ll find quaint old homes with character,” Mulkerin says. Foursquares, Colonial Revivals, Dutch Colonials and bungalows are all common styles of the area, many with coastal New England flairs like shiplap or shingle siding. The median price for the neighborhood is approximately $530,000, though a rare two-bedroom condo might sell for less than $400,000. On the other hand, a historic Victorian house with a sprawling five bedrooms recently sold for $1 million.

Natural walking trails and sporting facilities
The outdoors is within arm’s reach at Capisic Pond Park, a stretch of scenic walking paths along the water. This spot is popular with birders looking to spot some herons or egrets wading in the shallows and with families who come to ice skate on the pond’s frozen surface in the winter. Kids who prefer team sports might try stepping up to bat at Perry Little League Field, which is adjacent to the larger diamond at Dougherty Field. The athletic complex also has a skate park where residents can lace up their roller skates or grab their skateboards and hit the half-pipes. Others spend their time getting their hands dirty tending to the Libbytown Community Garden, and in summertime, the Kiwanis Community Pool is a great way to cool off after a fun day on the playground.

A hub for creatives of all kinds
Embodying the neighborhood’s quirky and creative character is the Rosemont Artists Guild of Maine, a collective of more than 30 craftsmen whose works span multiple mediums, from painting to pottery to fiber arts. The guild hosts an annual holiday show at Breakwater School, bringing residents from across the community to support their neighbors and get in some Christmas shopping.

A well-regarded private school, with public schools nearby
Kids in Rosemont can attend Portland Public Schools. Rowe Elementary replaced the former Hall Elementary School in 2018 and scores a 2 out of 10 on GreatSchools. After the fifth grade, students move up to Lincoln Middle, which receives a B rating from Niche. Portland Public Schools is a high school choice district, meaning families can select from three district high schools. The closest, Deering High, earns a B grade and was the first school in Portland (and southern Maine) to offer Arabic as a language. For an alternative option, kids in kindergarten through the eighth grade can attend nearby Breakwater School, a private school that implements outdoor learning.

Neighborhood eateries and a shopping center down the road
Residents make the quick trip down to Westgate Shopping Center for everyday needs, like produce from Shaw’s and prescriptions from CVS. For a bite on the way home, locals can stop by Maria’s, an Italian restaurant whose classic vibe comes from its exposed brick walls, white tablecloths and heaping bowls of pasta. Right down the street is Mitr Ping Yang Thai Kitchen, a casual but hip eatery with a sleek sage green interior. Those with a sweet tooth and a coffee addiction can find their fix in the same place at Crooked Mile Café and Crooked Cones, a combination coffeehouse and ice cream shop. And at Rosemont Bakery, residents can grab last-minute local groceries, from produce to meats to wines, just a few blocks from home.

Easy access to the peninsula or the airport
While Rosemont is walkable in some areas, most residents need a car to get between work, school and home. Greater Portland Metro bus stops allow some to commute without a vehicle while others hop on Interstate 295 to the east. Downtown Portland and all its city attractions, from museums to dining to its historic harbor, are less than 10 minutes from most homes. Residents might also see planes taking off from across the Fore River, as the Portland International Jetport is less than 5 minutes to the south.
Rosemont has several bus stops to get around town.
