Tryon Creek State and Marica natural areas
Homes on the eastern side of Arnold Creek enjoy backyard views of the Tryon Creek State Natural Area, which includes 670 acres of wetlands with around eight miles of biking, hiking and horseback riding trails. A stunning representation of Portland nature, the wetlands are covered with a blanket of green foliage and moss nourished by 18 inches of average rainfall during the area’s rainiest months. Mushrooms of all shapes and sizes sprout from the trunks of trees and from the damp forest floor, across which slugs of different species make their way. Terry Riley Bridge, a structure suspended with rope and fashioned with just three rows of wooden planks nailed together, bridges one of three creeks in the natural area for those who dare to cross it.Friends of Tryon Creek, a nonprofit, provides a week-long day camp with educational activities for children ages seven to 12, along with community activities for adults, like full moon hikes, land-tending courses and the annual Trillium Festival to celebrate the arrival of spring. The Maricara Natural Area is another option for outdoor adventure, with 17 acres of wetlands and forests populated with towering, ivy-covered trees.
A-minus-rated Stephenson Elementary School
Arnold Creek enjoys access to Stephenson Elementary School, which Niche rated with an A-minus. “It’s one of the best elementary schools in the area,” Bucks says. With plenty of after-school programs, parents can sign their little ones up for ukelele, yoga, music production and other unique classes. After Stephenson, local children attend Jackson Middle School, which receives a B-plus. Lastly, they can choose from 28 Advanced Placement and 12 dual credit courses at B-rated Ida B. Wells High School. The high school also offers four years of computer science and two years of systems dynamics and modeling coursework. Artistically minded students enjoy a selection of 13 art courses—including illustration, ceramics and AP Studio Art—and 18 music and performing arts courses.Arnold Creek—an architectural smorgasbord
Arnold Creek consists almost entirely of single-family homes, which come in a variety of architectural flavors. With just a few larger roads in the neighborhood, most residents enjoy a sense of privacy on quiet streets that wind and curve on their own accord. Though most homes in the neighborhood were built after the 1950s, they differ vastly when it comes to style. Tudor-inspired estates sit next to orderly Dutch Colonials, which share the street with monochromatic midcentury modern builds. Though many home prices have entered seven-digit territory, homebuyers will find properties that start around $520,000 in a style that suits their personality and lifestyle. The median price of a single-family home in Arnold Creek is $935,000, though many properties sell above the $1-million mark. The median housing prices mirror the higher median household income in the neighborhood, which falls at $158,763, compared to the nationwide average of $70,967. The community is also one of the country’s more educated; college graduates make up 78.7% of the population in Arnold Creek, while they make up 34.1% of the American population.
On the border of city and suburb
Arnold Creek straddles the border between city and suburb—though it barely lies within Portland City borders, its winding residential streets create a feeling of suburbia. However, when residents need to get to the action of downtown, they can hop on northbound Interstate 5. For those headed the opposite way, Boones Ferry Road takes drivers past the Oswego Towne Square and further into the communities that surround Lake Oswego.Under 10 minutes from Lake Oswego, Multnomah shopping
The Oswego Towne Square shopping center borders Arnold Creek on its south side, featuring a Columbia Factory Store and New Seasons Market, as well as casual dining options like Little Big Burger and Flying Pie Pizzeria. Otherwise, locals can head across the parking lot to Hanko’s Sports Bar & Grill, complete with pool tables, a shuffleboard table and wooden wall paneling. For its “starting line-up” of appetizers, Hanko’s offers a potato snack plate—consisting of tater tots, French fries and sweet potato pies—nachos supreme or soft pub pretzel to pair with a tall one. However, the neighborhood is also under a 10-minute drive to the local businesses and boutiques of both Lake Oswego and Multnomah.
