Peaceful, suburban living close to trendy Portland neighborhoods
Close to some of East Portland's most trendy neighborhoods, Creston-Kenilworth is a residential neighborhood within walking or biking distance from plenty of options for shopping, dining and outdoor recreation, creating "Suburban feel in the heart of the city that so many residents love," says John McKay, a former resident and broker who has been selling homes throughout the Portland metro and Washington area since 2011. Creston-Kenilworth sprung up along a network of abandoned streetcar lines that crisscrossed the city more than 120 years ago and is now surrounded by a diverse array of businesses and shops. McKay recommends the neighborhood for those who "Want to live in a central location and enjoy the eclectic, progressive vibe that’s made the city famous," explaining that, while the neighborhood itself is residential, "It's just a few minutes from popular areas like Sellwood, Woodstock, and Division." Within the neighborhood, visitors can find a mix of vintage, single-family homes, a slew of gray apartment buildings erected in the 1970s, a 32-apartment EcoVillage with resident gardens and a community center with a permaculture garden that offers weekly aromatherapy yoga classes. Creston-Kenilworth also has an active community that often comes together for "Block parties and to support small businesses," says McKay, noting that "it's the kind of place you always see people out, whether doing Zumba in the park or just walking somewhere for lunch." With a mix of classic Portland shopping and dining with a comfy, suburban vibe at home, Creston-Kenilworth is a tight-knit, welcoming neighborhood that meets its past with a creative and inclusive present.

Many homes also feature lovingly-tended outdoor spaces and creative front gardens, and because the neighborhood is almost completely residential within its borders, it "Sometimes feels like you aren't in the city." Locally, Creston-Kenilworth also borders options for shopping and dining along Powell Boulevard and Foster Road. “Foster has all kinds of funky businesses on it,” says Claire Paris, owner and principal broker at Paris Group Realty in Portland. She says the businesses along SE Foster Road – the main commercial strip in Creston-Kenilworth – are a great reason to visit the neighborhood. It’s also one of only two diagonal streets in SE Portland, she says, adding that this commercial corridor is full of bars and restaurants like Bar Maven, where residents can pair craft beer with Middle Eastern bar bites or Tambayan Restaurant, which is known for its homestyle Filipino entrees. For some of the best mole in town, try Nayar Taqueria, or, when cooking at home, simply walk, bike, or take a short drive over to People's Food Co-op, where residents can find all the fresh, organic ingredients they need.
