The hidden riverside community of East Columbia
Seven miles north of Downtown Portland along the Columbia River, East Columbia can be a waterfront paradise or a suburban haven. “East Columbia is kind of an undiscovered neighborhood,” says Joe Spanish, managing broker with Windermere Real Estate, who has lived in Portland since 1980 and grew up near East Columbia. “When you drive in, there’s a lot of open space and it feels rural. Then you get to this oasis of new construction that you wouldn’t expect. And it’s nice because in the urban core, you’re looking at houses from the early 1900s that can require a lot of maintenance, while these are much newer.”
Early 2000s architecture and private docks
Most of East Columbia’s homes are situated on quarter-acre lots along short suburban streets surrounded by greenery. They include a mix of Craftsman and ranch-style houses built in the early 2000s, many of which come with attached two-car garages. With around 1,500 to 1,700 square feet of living space, these homes typically sell for around $450,000 to $500,000. Homes by the water, however, sell for significantly more, ranging from $1 million to more than $2 million. They come in all shapes and sizes, offering views of the river and Vancouver, Washington in the distance from each backyard deck. And though they’re located right by the main road of NE Marine Drive, many are hidden by bushes and trees in the front, creating more privacy. Private backyard docks also allow residents to hop on their boats and explore the Columbia.
Columbia River access and nearby golf courses
Those who live inland can keep their boat docked at one of the many marinas or leave it at home and access the river from the M. James Gleason Memorial Boat Ramp. “If you’re into water sports and have a boat, this is a great place to live,” says Spanish. “You don’t have to dock your boat if you don’t want to because most homes have enough space for them.” The ramp is located right next to Broughton Beach Park, where locals enjoy watching planes take off and land at Portland International Airport along with the eastern sunrise and western sunset. Golfers in East Columbia can hit the greens at either Columbia Edgewater Country Club or Riverside Golf & Country Club, both of which offer dining and an outdoor pool. For more outdoor fun, head to Columbia Children’s Arboretum, a dog-friendly park with trails and thousands of trees planted by middle schoolers back in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Language immersion at Roosevelt High School
Children today attend Faubion School, serving kindergarten through eighth-grade students. They have the option of moving on to Jefferson High School or Roosevelt High School. Jefferson has a B-minus rating from Niche and is ranked the 13th-best college prep high school in the state. Roosevelt is rated a C-plus and is separated into three schools: Pursuit of Wellness Education at Roosevelt (POWER), which focuses heavily on math and science, Spanish-English International School, offering language immersion education and the Arts, Communications and Technology School, where students can dive deep in the study of fine, visual and performing arts.
Surrounding industry and local bites
Though the residential section of East Columbia feels very suburban, it’s surrounded by industrial businesses, including many trucking companies, so it’s normal to see tractor trailers everywhere on the main roads, especially NE Columbia Boulevard. In the middle of all that are a few local restaurants, like Roake’s, a retro cash-only spot famous for its signature Long Coney Dog. Locals and industrial workers in the neighborhood also like to grab tacos and Mexican platters from the El Pollo Feliz food truck, known for its grilled chicken. Meanwhile, King’s Deli offers a unique dining experience, serving both Chinese food and a variety of subs.
Drive to shopping hubs via Interstate 5
Shoppers can either drive three miles to Hayden Meadows Square, which has big retailers like Dick’s, Lowe’s and Fisherman’s Marine & Outdoor or head a mile further on Interstate 5 to the dozens of big box stores on Hayden Island.
