Forested-living in northwest Portland
Moss-covered red cedar, towering Douglas firs and western hemlock trees enclose the community with fresh air and scenic greenery. Residents here value their relationship with nature and the nearby Forest Park, offering outdoor recreation from hiking to birdwatching and miles of trails for exploration. Locals can spend their time hiking along the Wildwood Trail here, or take advantage of the quick 10-mile commute into downtown Portland. The Forest Park neighborhood offers a convenient duality of fresh outdoors and urban access that attracts a variety of individuals into the area. Homeowners here capitalize on the nature-oriented lifestyle, the highly-rated school district and the small-town feel maintained through seasonal events at the Quail Creek Ranch and local eateries like the Skyline Restaurant. “Forest Park is a very desirable place to live, located conveniently between downtown Portland, several hospitals and companies like Intel and Nike — It’s attractive to a large demographic but mostly those in the medical profession and high-tech industry,” says long-time local Ruth Tarr, principal broker with Tarr Realty NW.

Hiking and wildlife viewing at Forest Park
When seeking time outdoors, residents can hike along the 30-mile Wildwood Trail found at Forest Park, which offers 5,200 acres of wildlife viewing and greenery to explore. “Forest Park is one of the largest inner city parks in the country — There are walking and biking trails throughout the wooded park accessible year-round,” says Tarr. Visitors can catch a glimpse of roughly 550 different species of birds, mammals and invertebrates that reside within the area. The Witch’s Castle can be accessed from the Wildwood Trail. This moss-covered manor built in the 1930s offers locals an abandoned structure to explore. Earning its name from local high school students, the manor was primarily used as a bathroom for hikers and a park ranger station. Today, the building is a quaint place for locals to explore. Bird watching is common at the Bird Alliance of Oregon, offering a chance to see native birds, like Pacific wrens, Wilson’s warblers and chestnut-backed chickadees along 4 miles of trails on the southern end of the community. For views of the Willamette Stone, history enthusiasts can head to the Willamette Stone State Heritage Site, which marks the origin of the Willamette Meridian and Willamette Baseline — commemorated by a circular marker and plaque.
