Urban-living in a southeast pocket of Portland

Located in the southeast section of Portland, Foster-Powell offers a residential hub equipped with increased walkability and nearby urban amenities that make Portland desirable. This pocket of the city is bounded by three important thoroughfares: Southeast Foster Road, Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast 82nd Avenue — streets that give Foster-Powell its unique-to-Portland triangular shape. Recent years have seen an inflow of new residents to the area, creating a melting pot of people who have contributed to the neighborhood’s vibrancy. Locals here can spend their time traveling along the paved sidewalks to locally-owned eateries like An Xuyen Bakery, serving a few tennis matches over at Essex Park and attending events hosted by the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association like the National Night Out block party. Residents here capitalize on the low entry prices, the community-oriented nature of the neighborhood and the quick 6-mile commute into downtown Portland. “Portland has changed a lot over the years, but Foster-Powell has maintained its gritty feel as popularity and walkability increased,” says long-time local John McKay, Principal Real Estate Broker at Premiere Property Group, LLC with over 12 years of experience selling in the area.

Single family homes dominate the area, while most homes date back to the early 1900s and the 50s and 60s. Foster-Powell boasts paved sidewalks throughout the neighborhood, making the enclave thoroughly walkable. With a median sales price of $450,000, price points here can range from the high $200,000s to upwards of $1,100,000 depending on the age, size and location of the property. For example, a two-bedroom bungalow fixer-upper can go for around $265,000, while a fully renovated six-bedroom American Foursquare can go for around $1,100,000. Homes here often feature paved driveways, single-car garages and are typically fronted by small lawns with ornate barriers for added privacy from neighbors. Homes here are as diverse as their owners and often reflect characteristics through colored vinyl siding and vibrant front doors. “The Foster-Powell community attracts young families, creatives and musicians into the area — there’s even a rumor that Jim Morrison from The Doors lived in the neighborhood in the late 60s,” says McKay.

There are a bunch of creepy people here. Needles are a common sight. I hate this neighborhood, it's scary. Like, gunshots go off and stuff. The other day, a guy was swinging a machete walking across the street. Also, the street itself is horrible. Cars weave in and out and speed, it's terrible.
