Where quiet meets commerce
Although residents may see a few flocks flying overhead, the geese that give this Portland neighborhood its name wandered freely on farmland in the 19th century. The farms are long gone, but the community honors this history with the name Goose Hollow. This trendy neighborhood, like the rest of Portland, offers an eclectic mixture of aesthetics, amenities, and characteristics, from its verdant, hillside streetscapes to its famous Goose Hollow Inn and its abundance of main-street shopping along Burnside Street. These features, compounded with Goose Hollow’s competitive housing prices, ensure that Goose Hollow has something for everyone within its compact boundaries.

Sports, steaks and Reuben sandwiches
Most of Goose Hollow’s restaurants are found just north of Providence Park stadium, along West Burnside Street. There, one can find casual spots, including up-and-coming Japanese deli Yokai Musubi, and the deliciously high-end RingSide Steakhouse, a Portland fixture for over 75 years. Perhaps the most famous community hub of Goose Hollow is the Goose Hollow Inn, founded in 1967 by future Portland mayor Bud Clark, who founded the pub with the intent of reviving the name “Goose Hollow” as it nearly left common parlance. This pub has been a mainstay of the community for decades, with a unique mission statement focused on “quality draft, fine food, pleasant music, and stimulating company,” and a specialty in Reuben sandwiches. Visitors can enjoy a musical and merry atmosphere while savoring food, drinks, and the company of friends old and new.
Most of the neighborhood’s shopping can be found on and around West Burnside Street. While the neighborhood doesn’t have the fancy boutiques and galleries prevalent on the east side of Interstate 405, what Goose Hollow does have is popular shopping centers and chain pharmacies, along with the major grocery chain Zupan’s Markets and everything-store Fred Meyer. There are also a fair number of local shops scattered throughout the neighborhood, such as the board game store Mox Boarding House.

Homes in the hollow
Located at the foothills of the Tualatin Mountains, Goose Hollow is composed of a mix of houses, apartments and commercial buildings. Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the late 19th or early 20th centuries and range from modest bungalows to historic Victorians and palatial Colonial Revivals. These residences range in value from $230,000 to over $2 million, reflecting the great diversity in housing sizes, styles, and ages. Homes in the area tend to be a bit pricier than the city average, not just because of their size but because of the neighborhood’s greenery and excellent views of the city.

Parks for soccer and Sakura
Goose Hollow’s commercial district centers on Providence Park, one of the oldest major soccer stadiums in the nation and home to the Portland Thorns and Portland Timbers. On the west side of Goose Hollow, iconic Washington Park overlooks the neighborhood and the city. The park, which many locals argue is the prettiest in any American city, has everything from a Japanese garden and an arboretum to a forestry museum — not to mention the zoo.

I enjoy my neighborhood, everything is very accessible and organized. There's a lot to do in Portland, restaurants and other establishments everywhere. There is a homelessness problem, which is unfortunate.

All homes have a story. And the Rinehart Home has a magnificent one. Designed by architect Emil Schacht, built in 1907, this home was owned for 84 years by the Rinehart family, a prominent Portland family of doctors. Back in the early 1940's when the Rinehart's purchased the home, the trolley passing by on Vista Ave was likely a major selling point, offering a direct route to OHSU. Passed down
